What are Pearly Penile Papules?

Pearly penile papules (PPP), also known as Hirsutoid Papillomas, are a common condition affecting the glans (the head of your penis).

These tiny white or skin-coloured bumps form most commonly around the margin of the glans, often in rows.

Pearly penile papules are a normal anatomic variant and do not cause any symptoms. They are not due to sexual activity, sexually transmitted disease or lack of hygiene. They are not infectious or contagious and they are not painful whatsoever.

Genuine pearly penile papules are benign. Once they develop, they don’t spread or change much in size or shape.

A papule is a raised, pimple-like growth on the skin that does not produce pus. The papules usually appear after puberty and are more common in men who have not been circumcised. However, they can appear on any male.

Penile papules can be identified by several characteristics:

  • They are smooth
  • Look like tiny bumps
  • Usually measure 1–4mm in diameter
  • Form in rows around base of glans (rounded head of the penis)

The presence of pearly penile papules is very common, affecting up to 43% of men, and they do not pose any medical issue.

But many men opt for their treatment and removal, usually to avoid confusion with a genital wart infection or other STI.

In other cases, they simply don’t like the look of them and wish to improve the overall appearance of their intimate area, preferring the appearance of a smooth, unblemished shaft.

Many men can suffer from anxiety due to the presence of pearly penile papules because people can mistake them for sexually transmissible diseases.

This can cause great negative impact on his self-esteem, cause intimacy issues, and inhibit confident engagement in sexual activity, which can then have further impact on mental health and relationships.

Pearly Penile Papules Removal and Treatment Options

There are numerous methods for the removal of pearly penile papules, and they range in efficacy.

Here at Contour Clinics, we use Surgitron radiofrequency (RF) therapy to remove pearly penile papules.

This method of removal is simple, efficient and is the most comfortable treatment option available for effectively erasing the area of pearly penile papules.

For your treatment, anaesthetic cream is applied to numb the treatment area. A local anaesthetic is then delivered to the area to completely numb the treatment area. We then use radiofrequency to ‘shave’ and remove the papules.

The removal procedure is simple and effective, lasting around 5–10 minutes. There are no scalpels or stitches.

Other methods such as topical creams, surgical excision, laser therapy and cryotherapy are effective, but carry a higher risk of damage to the surrounding skin tissue, and even permanent scarring.

The energy-based technology that we use at Contour Clinics for PPP removal uses radiofrequency (RF) to perform electrosurgery in a way that’s precise, controlled and non-destructive of surrounding skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most recommended treatment for pearly penile papules?

The energy-based technology that we use at Contour Clinics for PPP removal uses radiofrequency (RF) to perform electrosurgery in a way that’s precise, controlled and non-destructive of skin tissue.

We choose this method because it is the gold standard for benign cosmetic lesions. Its precision means far less trauma caused to surrounding skin compared to older removal techniques.

How does treatment work?

Radiofrequency (RF) is a type of electrosurgery that uses energy to remove raised skin lesions such as papules or moles.

In your treatment, the area of skin to be treated will be numbed with topical numbing cream, and the targeted energy of the RF beam acts to ‘shave’ the lesions to sit at skin level.

This erases the papules down to skin level permanently, with minimal risk of scarring.

How do I schedule an appointment for treatment?
