Understanding Excessive Hand Sweating

Hyperhidrosis – excessive sweating – is a condition that involves heavy sweating in a body area despite the body not needing to be cooled. It can affect many different areas and is experienced by men and women of all ages and health levels.

Normal sweating is a bodily function that effectively rids the body of toxins and lowers body temperature.

However, for sufferers of excessive hand sweating or palmar hyperhidrosis, having wet or clammy hands and fingers is constant, and is excessive to the point of discomfort and being noticeable on what they touch.

Excessive sweating is a medical concern with the potential of leading to psychological issues and a feeling that we cannot live freely without shame. It’s an issue that impacts its sufferer every day, social embarrassment, anxiety and reduced quality of life being just some of the negative effects.

Daily life for those who are dealing with excessive sweating can be a constant challenge, as they are plagued by anxiety over having their condition exposed.

We can be hindered by and limiting in how we use and present our body. Some social situations are avoided by sufferers of excessive sweating, in a bid to hide their problem.

Many people with excessive hand sweating feel worried about encountering situations where they cannot hide the problem, such as shaking hands with a colleague, holding the hand of their partner or romantic interest, playing sports, handling papers or documents, sharing devices or tools, and sharing books or other objects where their sweat will be seen as wet patches or smears.

It can negatively impact relationships with partners, friends, family, co-workers and teammates.

Excessive sweating is an issue that can deeply affect a person’s self-esteem, confidence, behaviour and the way they live their life, which becomes damaging to their mental health and outlook.

Sweaty Hand Treatment Options

There are numerous methods available for keeping excessive hand sweating at bay, however they range in efficacy and longevity.

  • Prescription solutions. Wipes soaked in glycopyrronium tosylate (Qbrexza) may ease symptoms of the hands, feet and underarms. Possible side effects of these products include mild skin irritation and dry mouth.
  • Antiperspirants for hands. These are not like swiping your usual deodorant across your palms; these are formulated specifically for the hands and fingers.
  • Nerve-blocking medications. Some pills (oral medications) block the nerves that trigger sweat glands. This can reduce sweating in some people. Possible side effects include dry mouth, blurred vision and bladder problems.
  • Iontophoresis or ‘electro-antiperspirant’. This is a treatment delivered by a machine using electro current technology. Although it can temporarily cease sweating, it has also been known to increase sweating before reducing it, which can cause further inconvenience and discomfort.
  • Botulinum toxin injections. Treatment with botulinum toxin – classically used for anti-wrinkle injections – blocks the nerves that trigger the sweat glands. The area of your body to be treated will need several injections. The results aren’t instant; they will build to become noticeable within about a week or two. A possible side effect is short-term muscle weakness in the treated area.
  • Laser. This refers to the use of beamed energy that heats and desensitises the glands that are releasing too much sweat. Some of these procedures are carried out under local anaesthetic and use tiny incision and cannula, while others use radiofrequency microneedling. The latter method temporarily shuts down the glands but is non-invasive, while the former destroys the targeted glands to provide permanent results but is an invasive procedure.

Hand Sweat Laser Treatment

Did you know that excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) can also be treated by dermal laser?

A highly focused, very narrow beam of laser energy can target specific body structures without injuring the surrounding tissue. This makes laser therapy powerful and precise.

For the treatment of excessive sweating, lasers are beneficial because they can precisely target, heat and inhibit the overactive sweat glands responsible for your surplus sweat production.

These sweat glands are primarily found in a specific layer of tissue under the skin of the treatment area.

For effective sweat reduction treatment, we use the Morpheus8 radiofrequency (RF) microneedling technology.

During a Morpheus8 treatment, local anaesthetic is applied to numb the area, and then a combination of microneedling and radiofrequency heat will desensitise the targeted sweat glands.

This process effectively eliminates excessive sweating in that area by inhibiting activity in the glands, which prevents them from overproducing sweat.

The Morpheus8 treatment for excessive sweating generally requires only one session. For some patients a second Morpheus8 session may be recommended.
