What is a Non-Ablative Fractional Laser?

Ablative and non-ablative laser treatments are two distinct categories of cosmetic procedures that use laser technology to treat the appearance of the skin. They differ significantly in terms of their mechanisms of action, intensity, downtime, and the type of skin concerns they address.

The key difference between the two types of laser treatments is the depth of skin tissue they target, and how that affects the skin.

Ablative laser works to remove the outermost layer of the skin (epidermis) and some of the underlying dermis. Ablative laser creates controlled injuries in the skin’s surface, which triggers a natural healing process. Ablative lasers are more aggressive and intense compared to non-ablative lasers. They can provide more dramatic results but also come with a longer recovery time and a higher risk of side effects.

Non-ablative lasers create microscopic, controlled thermal injuries in the deeper layers of the skin (dermis) without removing the outer layer. They stimulate collagen and elastin production without causing visible damage to the skin’s surface.

Non-ablative lasers are less intense and aggressive compared to ablative lasers. They are considered gentler on the skin and typically have a shorter recovery period. Patients may experience mild redness and swelling that usually subsides within a few days.

Before and After

Before and after stretch mark removal. This truly impressive and transformative result was achieved with 8 sessions of Non-Ablative Fractional Laser treatment. Each session is spaced around 4-8 weeks apart for best outcome.

How Does it Work?

Non-ablative fractional laser treatments use fractional laser technology to create thousands of microscopic, controlled wounds in the skin’s surface.

These tiny, pinpoint laser beams penetrate the skin, creating micro-injuries. The body’s natural healing process then kicks in, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin. As new collagen forms, it can help improve skin texture, tone and appearance.

When you come for your fractional laser treatment, your Skin & Laser Therapist will chat to you about your skincare routine and ask which products or ingredients you use.

This is an important step, so that we can devise an effective at-home portion of your treatment plan. Skincare maintenance is a crucial component of your treatment success.

Next, your Skin & Laser Therapist will cleanse and prep the skin with an anti-bacterial solution.

Once the laser treatment begins, all you will need to do is relax while your clinician moves the laser headpiece over your skin in methodical portions. You will hear the laser making its snapping sound, and you will feel a light snapping sensation on your skin. The treatment is not painful and is easy and comfortable to endure.

Once the laser treatment has finished, your Skin & Laser Therapist will apply a protective and hydrating product to your skin, followed by a high-factor SPF physical sunscreen.

For a few hours following your treatment, your treated skin may feel a little tender or delicate, and you might notice some redness, like very mild sunburn. However, some patients do not experience these effects at all.

Non-Ablative Fractional Laser Treatments at Contour Clinics

Contour Clinics offers a comprehensive range of laser skin treatment options for different requirements.

Fraxel Laser (1927 and 1550 wavelengths)

This is one of our favourite lasers for treating scarring, and it provides excellent results that are suitable for most skin types. Fraxel is ideal for all forms of scarring, including traumatic, surgical or acne scars.

Fractional Non-Ablative Laser with Icon 1540

This works in a similar way to Fraxel, resurfacing the skin to fade away pigmentation, scarring and other complexion concerns, but is slightly less aggressive for those who don’t have the same downtime available. Results are comparable to Fraxel. It’s suitable for all skin types, except for those with melasma.

Q-Switch Laser

We choose this type of laser to treat melasma, as it’s not heat based and therefore will not exacerbate the condition. We also use this laser for tattoo removal, as well as scar removal. It’s great for mild scarring in all skin types and has the added benefit of intensive collagen stimulation. Downtime is the shortest, with only 1-2 hours of mild redness experienced post-treatment.

We understand that the world of skin and laser technology can be overwhelming, so rest assured that your Skin & Laser Therapist here at Contour Clinics will be your guide! We will explain, recommend and support you towards your most suitable treatment option.

No matter what your skin concerns may be, together we will help you choose the right solution and start you on your journey to skin that you love.
