What’s Involved in a Dermamelan Peel?

The Dermamelan treatment consists of an in-clinic phase (Dermamelan peel) and a home care phase (Mesoesthetic products).

Both phases are equally as important, and crucial to the overall success of the Dermamelan treatment.

Your treating Skin & Laser Therapist will also recommend that you prepare your skin for treatment, as detailed below.

Step 1: Prepare

We recommend a consultation with one of our Skin & laser Therapists if you are considering Dermamelan. Consult appointments at Contour Clinics are complimentary and obligation-free.

Once we have assessed your skin and defined a treatment plan for you, we can go ahead with prepping your skin for your Dermamelan treatment.

Your therapist will recommend the use of a pigment-inhibiting product at home, to be applied daily for about four weeks prior to your Dermamelan appointment.

We highly recommend Ilumaé The Brightening Crème as a pigment inhibitor for your skin prep. This product is also suitable to continue using beyond your treatment as part of your skincare maintenance regimen.

Step 2: In Clinic

Dermamelan treatment involves the application of a thick, medical-grade depigmenting mask in clinic.

After cleansing the skin, the Dermamelan mask will be applied by your therapist. This feels like a typical face mask or heavy moisturiser. The solution is adjusted according to your concerns and skin type.

You will need to keep the peel on after leaving the clinic, and then remove it later at home.

Your therapist will advise you on how long to keep the mask on, depending on your skin type and severity of pigmentation, but the duration is generally between 8–12 hours. We strongly advise against sleeping with the mask on.

At the end of your in-clinic treatment, we provide you with the take-home course of full-size Mesoesthetic products that you will need for your homecare regimen. These products are included as part of your Dermamelan service.

Your therapist will thoroughly explain how to perform the at-home steps with these products. We are always available for ongoing support and guidance after your appointment, too.

Step 3: At Home

Once your recommended mask duration has passed, you are ready to remove the mask at home. We recommend doing this gently with slightly warm water.

Upon removing the mask, you may feel some tingling and mild stinging, which is normal and to be expected.

Once you have removed the mask, you can go about your normal activities, except for intense exercise, as heat or sweating may exacerbate facial discomfort.

Now is the time to begin your at-home phase of the Dermamelan treatment.

While the in-clinic mask is a significant step of the treatment process, it’s not enough to get you the full results all on its own. This treatment relies on your adherence to the at-home steps to activate and reach its full effects.

Following the mask peel stage, it’s essential that you strictly follow instructions for applying the provided home care products.

Step 4: Maintenance

The results of the treatment can become evident in as soon as 10–14 days with visibly clearer and brighter skin. Ongoing improvement in the skin can be seen over the next month.

You can maintain the results of your Dermamelan treatment by continuing the use of your pigment inhibitor, as well as daily application of a physical sunscreen.

Targeted Treatment for Melasma, Chloasma and Hyperpigmentation

The beauty of the Dermamelan treatment is that it targets the root of the problem – not just minimising the surface effect – providing a comprehensive and long-lasting outcome.

The most common pigmentation concerns that can be treated with Dermamelan include:

  • Melasma / Chloasma
  • Brown spots
  • Hyperpigmentation and discolouration from acne
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
  • Uneven skin tone or brown blotchy skin
  • Hyperpigmentation from laser and peel treatments
  • Rosacea
  • Lentigo

Hyperpigmentation is a common skin condition of increased melanin (pigment) in the skin that presents as darkness and uneven skin tone.

It is the most common skin complaint in Australia and can contribute to the appearance of ageing in the skin.

The mechanism for this increase in dermal melanin can be driven by several factors. These include sun exposure, hormonal changes (contraception, pregnancy, thyroid conditions), genetic factors (common in darker skin types) and following inflammation.
