Microneedling and exosomes being applied to a male patient's facial skin at Contour Clinics

What Are Exosomes?

Exosomes are nano-sized extracellular vesicles released by cells throughout the body, including stem cells. You can think of them as tiny, biological couriers that deliver important instructions from one cell to another.

Inside each exosome is a cargo of growth factors, peptides, proteins, and genetic material (like RNA) – all of which support your skin cells to heal, regenerate, and produce new collagen. These messages signal tired or damaged skin cells to repair themselves, and behave like healthy cells.

In aesthetic and regenerative medicine, exosomes derived from mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are one of the most studied sources. They are studied for the signals they carry and the cellular responses those signals can prompt.

Exosomes used in skin treatments are derived from stem cells – typically mesenchymal stem cells – because the signals these cells produce are studied in relation to tissue repair, anti-inflammatory pathways, and the cellular processes involved in skin renewal.

How Exosomes for Skin Are Used

Exosomes are not a standalone treatment. Exosomes are used as an add-on to other skin procedures, where they’re applied topically to the skin after the primary treatment has created controlled micro-channels through which the exosome solution is absorbed.

In Australia, exosome products are not approved for injection by the TGA, and clinics that adhere to TGA guidance use topical delivery methods only. Exosomes are not injected at Contour Clinics – we apply them topically.

The treatments most commonly paired with exosomes at Contour Clinics are:

A consultation with a cosmetic practitioner can help you understand what treatment is appropriate for your skin – and whether exosomes can add value to it.

The science of exosomes and how they can work to address hair loss

The Science of Exosomes in Aesthetic Medicine

Exosomes are a growing area of aesthetic medicine, because of science and cultural reasons.

Scientifically, exosomes are relevant because of what they carry. Stem cells produce a wide range of signalling molecules – growth factors, RNA, cytokines, lipids – that are involved in tissue communication. Studying exosomes lets researchers explore the regenerative effects of stem cell signalling without using live stem cells, which has both scientific and regulatory advantages. Exosomes are a newer addition to the skin conversation, with a small (but growing) body of evidence behind them.

Culturally, exosomes are attracting attention because they offer a different approach to  skin health. By focusing on cellular signalling and tissue communication – rather than purely on resurfacing or volumising – it opens up a new conversation.

Exosomes vs Stem Cells

Exosomes are not stem cells. Stem cells are living cells with the ability to divide and differentiate into other cell types.

Exosomes are non-living extracellular vesicles – tiny biological packages released by cells, including stem cells, that carry signalling molecules. Exosomes are sometimes described as “the messengers stem cells use to communicate” – they carry the signals without being the cells themselves. This distinction matters because exosomes don’t introduce live cells into the body. They work with your skin’s own cells, not in place of them.

Exosomes vs Extracellular Vesicles

Extracellular vesicles are a broader category of particles released by cells across the body, all of them involved in transferring biological signals between cells. Exosomes are a specific type of extracellular vesicle, identified by their size and the way they’re produced inside the cell.
In aesthetic and regenerative medicine, the term exosomes is the one most commonly used, but in scientific literature you may also see references to extracellular vesicles or small extracellular vesicles.

How Exosomes Are Produced

The exosomes used in clinical aesthetic medicine are produced in controlled laboratory environments. The general process involves stem cells being cultured under sterile conditions, releasing exosomes into the surrounding medium. The exosomes are then isolated and purified using laboratory techniques such as ultracentrifugation and filtration, with each batch tested before being prepared for clinical use.

Why Pair Exosomes With a Skin Treatment?

It’s about timing. Microneedling, RF microneedling, and laser resurfacing work by creating controlled microscopic channels in the skin. Your skin then responds to these channels through its own healing and renewal processes.

Applying exosomes through these channels at the time of other treatment may support the cellular communication your skin is engaged in during recovery. Whether they’re a sensible addition depends on the specifics – your treatment, your skin, your goals. They’re an add-on to a primary treatment, considered only when both the treatment and the skin are right for it.

Who Exosomes for Skin May Be Suitable For

Exosomes are most commonly considered as a complementary treatment for patients who are:

  • Considering a skin needling, RF microneedling, or laser resurfacing procedure
  • Exploring whether regenerative options might support their primary treatment
  • Interested in regenerative skin treatment as part of a broader skin care approach
  • Open to a doctor-led conversation about whether the addition is worthwhile in their specific situation

Exosomes are unlikely to be appropriate as a first or only intervention. If your primary skin concern hasn’t yet been assessed and you don’t have a staged treatment plan, the appropriate first step is a skin consultation.

What a Skin Consultation Involves at Contour Clinics

A skin consultations is a doctor-led, evidence-based approach that may cover:

  • A private conversation about what you’ve been noticing and what’s prompting you to consider treatment
  • A clinical assessment of your skin, including texture, tone, and any specific areas of concern
  • A discussion of likely cause – sun exposure, ageing, post-procedure recovery, or something else
  • An honest conversation about the options available, including non-regenerative skin treatments, regenerative add-ons like exosomes, and combinations
  • If appropriate, a tailored plan that may include exosomes as part of a broader treatment approach
  • Clear information about what’s involved, what to expect, and what’s realistic for your skin

If the considered medical view is that a different path makes more sense for you – or that no treatment is appropriate – that’s what we’ll tell you.

Your consultation is complimentary. A $75 deposit secures your booking and is credited to your treatment if you proceed or refunded in full if you decide not to. How deposits work.

Why a Doctor-Led Consultation Matters

Skin treatment trends move quickly, and exosomes are a clear example of how fast the conversation can outpace the evidence. Marketing online has been louder than the clinical research, and the claims you’ll see vary widely depending on who’s making them. A measured, doctor-led conversation is the antidote to the noise.

A doctor-led consultation for exosomes and regenerative skin treatment means:

  • The assessment is conducted by an experienced medical practitioner
  • The conversation includes the medical context, including any medications, skin conditions, or factors relevant to your situation
  • The discussion of options is grounded in current evidence, not marketing claims
  • Limitations and realistic expectations are covered properly, not glossed over
  • If a treatment isn’t appropriate for you, you’re told that

Our approach to exosomes, including the specific product used and the clinical reasoning behind it, is covered fully in your consultation. The recommended approach for any individual depends on a doctor-led assessment, which is what the consultation is for.
