The Laser-Skin-Ink Interaction

It just zaps the tattoo and the ink disappears… simple right?

Well, not entirely. During your tattoo removal procedure, the revlite q-switch laser beam is applied to the tattooed area. The beam is fired at a specific wavelength, which is selectively absorbed by the tattoo ink particles, whilst leaving the surrounding skin structures unharmed.

Once the ink particles absorb the laser energy, they shatter into thousands of smaller particles. This allows the body’s immune system to carry them away over time. Eventually, over a series of sessions progressively more of the tattoo ink shatters leaving the skin clear of ink.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do tattoo removal lasers work?

Understanding how laser tattoo removal works is essential when choosing a clinic to carry out your treatment.

Medical grade lasers remove tattoos by delivering bursts of light in a billionth of a second. This energy causes a targeted micro trauma that smashes tattoo ink molecules into bite size pieces. The body’s natural reaction to trauma is to send white blood cells which are the warriors of your immune system. They attack the now smaller ink particles and metabolise them so that they may be removed from the skin. With each subsequent treatment, more and more ink is shattered, allowing the white blood cells to clear the tattooed area until eventually there is nothing but clear skin left.

Does tattoo removal hurt?

As we any laser treatment there is a slight level of discomfort experienced. We take all measures to reduce any form of discomfort. This involves the use of a topical anaesthetic cream, cooling jets, happy gas (nitrous oxide) and ice packs if necessary. Our laser is very well tolerated with minimal discomfort. Many people describe the sensation of being flicked with a rubber band.
