How do Steroid Injections Work?

Steroid injections exert their effects primarily through their anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation is the body’s natural response to injury, involving the immune system’s activation to repair damaged tissues.

However, excessive or prolonged inflammation can lead to various medical conditions and symptoms, including hypertrophied scarring. This is like an overreaction to healing, where the body has produced an excessive amount of collagen to heal its wound – to the point where a convex, raised scar has formed from the surplus collagen, creating a lesion instead of a flat scar.

Here are some ways we can use steroid injections:

Scar prevention. Steroid injections, when used as a pre-emptive measure, can help reduce the risk of scarring, by minimising inflammation and excess collagen formation at the site of incision. This might be done for a medical procedure or operation. By preventing excessive scar tissue, steroid injections promote a smoother healing process and minimise the formation of raised or hypertrophied scars.

Scar reduction. Steroid injections can also treat scarring that’s already occurred, working to minimise the appearance of raised or hypertrophied scars, including keloid scars. Steroids break down and flatten the bulky scar tissue that was originally formed by excessive collagen production in response to healing.

Skin quality. Steroid injections have the potential to improve skin quality, especially when used in the treatment of skin conditions like severe acne. By reducing inflammation within the skin, steroids can lead to a clearer complexion, reduced redness, and improved texture. Though we don’t offer this method of treatment for acne at Contour Clinics, we do offer a range of options. See all Acne Treatments.

It’s important to note that while steroid injections offer several benefits, they should only be administered by a qualified healthcare professional such as your Cosmetic Doctor at Contour Clinics, who can determine the appropriate dosage and frequency to maximise effectiveness while minimising potential risks.

Before Your Steroid Injection, First Consider

Before undergoing your first steroid injection treatment for scarring, it is essential to consider several important factors to ensure your safety and achieve the best possible outcomes.

It is highly advisable not to rush into any medical procedure, including steroid injections. First, have a thorough discussion with a qualified medical practitioner, such as one of Contour Clinics’ experienced Cosmetic Doctors, to ensure your suitability for this treatment.

We welcome you to the clinic for a complimentary, no-obligation consultation. Book one here.

Here are some aspects to consider before having steroid injections:

First, consultation. During a consultation with one of Contour Clinics’ Cosmetic Doctors, you can discuss the entire process including the procedure itself, your goals, expected outcome, potential risks, and any concerns you may have. This enables your Cosmetic Doctor to tailor a treatment plan to your individual needs, as well as provide you with a better idea of how your results will look, so that your expectations align with your results.

Medical history. Provide as many medical details to your treating Cosmetic Doctor as possible. Certain medical conditions may affect your eligibility for steroid injections. Conditions such as diabetes, immune system disorders, or previous adverse reactions to steroids should be disclosed to ensure a safe procedure.

Allergies. Inform your Cosmetic Doctor about any allergies you have, especially if you are allergic to steroids or any other medications. Allergic reactions can have serious consequences, so it’s crucial that your treating doctor is aware of your medical history.

Medications. Provide a list of all medications you are currently taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and supplements. Some medications can interact with steroids, affecting their efficacy or increasing risk of adverse reactions. We need this information to make appropriate recommendations for your treatment.

Your safety and satisfaction are paramount to us at Contour Clinics. Open and honest communication with your Cosmetic Doctor, along with a thorough understanding of the treatment and its outcome, will help you make an informed decision to have Steroid Injection treatment for scarring.

The Steroid Injection Treatment Process

When you come to the clinic for your appointment, your treating Cosmetic Doctor will begin with a consultation.

This is to assess the scar you wish to be treated and ascertain its suitability for steroid injections. If your Cosmetic Doctor diagnoses your scar as being a hypertrophied type, such as a keloid scar, then we will proceed with your treatment on the spot.

Steroid injections are a very straightforward and quick procedure, and you will not require pain relief or topical anaesthetic. Just like a quick jab from your GP, the steroid injection is over in seconds, administered directly into the scar.

You will be asked to come back into the clinic in 4 weeks’ time for a review appointment with your Cosmetic Doctor, so that your scar can be reviewed. We allow this four-week period so that your treatment has sufficient time to take effect and reach its full result. We will schedule this appointment with you before you leave the clinic.

When you return to the clinic for your follow-up appointment, your Cosmetic Doctor will review the progress and effectiveness of your treatment and assess its developed result. Quite often, we will recommend a subsequent round of treatment to achieve your optimal final result, which we can perform at the review appointment.
