The Blog What can I do about my Acne Scaring?
Acne will affect 85% of people at some point in their lives and for some it can be serious and leave pitted and pigmented scarring behind. So, it’s no surprise that there is a huge array of treatments available that claim to remove your scarring but how do you know which one is best for you? Here at Contour Clinics we offer many effective facial treatments to remove your scars and our experienced cosmetic doctors will put together an acne scarring treatment plan that is suited to your skin, your goals and your budget.
Skin Needling
Skin needling is one of the most effective treatments available to improve your scarring. It works by causing mechanical damage to the collagen and elastin fibres and old scar tissue in your skin which triggers our bodies to go and heal that area by stimulating our fibroblasts, the cells in our dermis that play a critical role in wound healing and produce new collagen fibres and improve blood flow to the area. Whilst it may sound daunting it really isn’t! Your skin therapist will apply a topical local anaesthetic to the area being treated before starting the needling procedure so you won’t feel any discomfort. A cartridge of ultra-fine micro needles is then attached to a device that resembles a pen which is passed over your skin twice, infusing a vitamin serum. You will be red for appox 24 hours following the treatment and may experience what feels similar to a mild sunburn. For best results you will need 4 treatments. LED light therapy goes hand in hand with this treatment and will help to accelerate your recovery time and improve results.
Factional Non-Ablative Laser
This high tech laser creates lots of tiny microthermal zones that your body then repairs with the formation of new collagen.Again, by causing trauma to the skin it triggers your body’s healing response so new healthy skin cells are produced and blood flow is improved. Topical local anaesthetic is applied prior to the procedure to minimize discomfort. You will experience some swelling and grid like marks on your skin following the treatment so you will need a couple of days at home to recover. Collagen formation takes from 90 days so whilst you will see gradual results over that period of time you won’t see the full effect of the course of treatments until the 3 month mark.
Before and after 3 treatments with our fractional non-ablative laser
Make sure to invest in a medical grade, prescriptive skin care routine for in between your clinic visits too, what you do at home is more important than what you do in the clinic! Retinol and Vitamin C are two skin hero’s when it comes to scarring and will accelerate your results from your in clinic treatments.
