Understanding the Types of Threads How Do Thread Lifts Work?

Thread lifting is a minimally invasive cosmetic treatment designed to subtly lift, support, and improve skin appearance without traditional surgery. The procedure involves placing very fine, absorbable threads just beneath the skin’s surface to gently elevate and support soft tissues, improving overall facial contours and definition.

Different types of threads are available, each with unique characteristics, designed to address varying cosmetic concerns:

Barbed Threads

These threads have tiny barbs along their length, helping to securely grip tissue beneath the skin. Barbed threads provide an immediate subtle lifting effect by physically repositioning tissue and encouraging a supportive skin response over time. An example used at Contour are MINT threads.

Cone Threads

Similar in purpose to barbed threads, cone threads feature small, absorbable cones rather than barbs, allowing them to anchor into the skin’s deeper layers. This design can provide subtle yet stable elevation and gentle repositioning of facial tissue. An example of this is Silhoutte Soft Threads.

PDO Threads (Polydioxanone)

PDO threads are widely used and popular due to their versatile characteristics. They’re fully absorbable and gradually dissolve within the skin over several months. PDO threads are designed to stimulate your skin’s natural supportive processes, potentially encouraging improved skin texture, firmness, and subtle facial lifting effects.

PLLA Threads (Poly-L-Lactic Acid)

PLLA threads are known for their potential to encourage a stronger and more sustained natural supportive response from the skin. These threads are absorbed gradually, typically lasting slightly longer than PDO threads. They are commonly considered in cases where more pronounced skin texture and support enhancement is desired.

PCL Threads (Polycaprolactone)

PCL threads have the longest absorption timeframe among commonly used threads. Known for their durability and extended supportive response within the skin, PCL threads may offer sustained skin improvement and subtle lifting effects over a more extended period.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are Thread face lifts performed?

A thread face lift is a minimally invasive cosmetic treatment aimed at gently lifting and supporting facial tissues to subtly improve facial contour and definition. Below is an overview of what you can expect during the procedure:

Step 1: Personalised Facial Analysis

The process begins with a comprehensive consultation, during which your cosmetic doctor carefully analyses your facial features, skin quality, and overall aesthetic objectives. They will recommend appropriate thread types and techniques tailored specifically to your individual goals, thoroughly explaining potential outcomes and realistic expectations.

Step 2: Preparing Your Skin

Once you are comfortable with your personalised treatment plan, your practitioner will cleanse and disinfect your skin. To ensure comfort throughout the procedure, local anaesthetic or numbing cream is applied to the treatment areas, minimising potential discomfort.

Step 3: Placing the Threads

Your cosmetic clinician will then insert specialised threads beneath your skin using a fine needle or cannula. The threads are carefully guided into place, precisely positioned to subtly lift and reposition facial tissues. These threads may contain small barbs or cones designed to gently secure the skin in an elevated position.

Step 4: Fine-Tuning Your Results

After placing the threads, your clinician gently adjusts and refines their position, carefully achieving the desired lifting and contouring effect. During this stage, you may provide feedback to ensure the outcome aligns closely with your expectations.

Step 5: Immediate Aftercare and Follow-Up

Once your procedure is complete, the entry points are cleansed, and your practitioner provides personalised aftercare instructions to help manage mild swelling or bruising. A follow-up appointment is typically scheduled, allowing your cosmetic doctor to assess your progress and answer any questions you may have.

At Contour Clinics, our experienced cosmetic doctors prioritise patient comfort, individualised care, and detailed guidance at every step of your journey.

Will there be any pain associated with the threadlift procedure?

There is typically minimal discomfort associated with thread-lifting. Although comfort levels cannot be guaranteed and every patient experiences the procedure differently. Your Contour Clinics cosmetic doctor will discuss expected discomfort levels and steps to manage discomfort at your complimentary consultation. In general discomfort may be managed in the following ways.

  • Topical numbing creme applied 30-45 minutes pre procedure
  • Local anaesthetic applied to the area to be treated
  • Nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”) if clinically indicated
  • Paracetamol

How long until results are visible?

Results may be visible immediately and may continue to improve up until 12-18 weeks when most people notice final results.

How long does a thread-lift last?

The duration of results differs from person to person and there are no guarantees how long any cosmetic medical procedure will last. Although in general, most patients notice thread-lifting results last from 12-18 months.

What are the potential risks associated with Thread Lifting?

All medical procedures carry risk. The risk as it relates to your unique circumstances will be discussed at your comprehensive consultation with our experienced cosmetic doctors.

Common risks include:

  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Mild discomfort/tenderness in the days following

Uncommon risks include:

  • Puckering- this occurs when the thread is placed slightly superficially causing the skin to indent. This often resolves in 1-2 weeks. If it has not resolved at this point, your cosmetic doctor can perform an in office release of the puckering. This is rare.
  • Infection
  • Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation – more common in darker skin types and presents as a pigmentation of the skin
