What is the process for getting fillers in your hands?
No preparation is required for the skin or hands themselves. We only recommend that you do not consume alcohol for 24 hours before your treatment, as excessive alcohol in your system can increase the likelihood of swelling and bruising.
It’s also recommended that you do not take blood-thinning medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Brufen, Nurofen), or diclofenac (Voltaren) before your treatment, as this can also encourage bruising. DO NOT stop any of these if they have been prescribed prior to discussing with your general practitioner.
For the procedure itself, you will be treated by one of our expert Cosmetic Doctors or Senior Cosmetic Nurses.
First, the treatment area will be cleaned with chlorhexidine disinfectant, then a topical anaesthetic (numbing cream) will be applied.
The dermal filler will be expertly placed, and your Cosmetic Doctor or Nurse will massage the filler into place. Over the following days, the filler will be integrated with the surrounding tissues and settle further.
You will see the results of your hand filler treatment straightaway. During the next 24 hours, it’s recommended that you do not consume alcohol, apply makeup to the treated area, or expose the area to pressure, hot environments, sauna or swimming. This is a precaution applicable to any injection site.
Your Cosmetic Doctor or Nurse will explain your aftercare to you during your hand filler appointment and answer any questions you may have.
After 1–2 weeks, you are welcomed back to the clinic for a follow-up appointment to review your results, and you may receive a complimentary top-up treatment if required.
Is dermal hand filler painful?
Just like with any other dermal filler treatment, hand filler is very easy for most patients to receive, with very little discomfort.
As with any injectable treatment, we apply topical anaesthetic (numbing cream) to the treatment area first, and we also have happy gas available for your utmost comfort.
The dermal filler itself also contains anaesthetic, making your injectable treatment as comfortable as possible.
Once the anaesthetic wears off, there is no pain or discomfort felt.
Are there any side effects of hand filler?
Immediately following your hand filler treatment, you will likely notice some swelling, which usually subsides within 48 hours.
Minor swelling may continue for up to two weeks; however, this is barely noticeable.
How long do dermal fillers last?
Fillers for the hands can last anywhere from 6 months to two years, depending on the type of filler used, the quantity of filler, the placement, and the individual patient.
As dermal filler is eventually broken down and naturally ridded by the body, it can also depend on how quickly a person metabolises the filler.
Is there any downtime needed after the procedure?
Not really, no. There is very little downtime required for a hand filler treatment, if any.
The only restrictions that could be considered as downtime would be pausing your usual fitness activities and avoiding alcohol, bacteria and extreme temperatures for 24–48 hours following your treatment. That means not washing your hands in hot water or a hot shower; not being in saunas or direct sun; and keeping your hands clean.
Otherwise, hand filler is a very convenient and straightforward treatment that you should find easy to accommodate in your schedule.
