The Blog Mole Removal Healing: Pictures & Aftercare

Contrary to popular belief, mole removal does not have to be synonymous with scarring.

Traditional mole removal involves excision with a scalpel, stitches, and restriction of movement post-procedure, which can be uncomfortable, painful and inconvenient. Some moles absolutely must be cut out this way, including those with features suspicious for skin cancer, in the lip or on the eyelid and flat moles. However, the vast majority of moles may be suitable for a more cosmetically appealing option.

Traditional cut and stitch methods or freezing cryotherapy methods always leave behind a scar. Even if this scar fades over time, it will usually always be visible.

Our cosmetic mole removal treatment uses Surgitron Radiofrequency (RF) technology to shave moles deemed suitable for cosmetic mole removal by our doctors to the skins surface level. In most cases this leaves no visible scar. There are no stitches to remove after this procedure.

Take a look at our mole removal healing pictures of real patients treated at Contour Clinics.

You do NOT have to live with unwanted moles, enquire to see if your mole/s are suitable for cosmetic mole removal today.

Note: Individual results may vary. All before and afters and recovery process photos are from real patients, and may not reflect the typical patients experience, and are not intended to represent or guarantee that anyone will achieve the same or similar results.

Mole Removal Healing

Our scarless mole removal treatment is a Radiofrequency shaving technology that uses a concentrated cutting beam of energy to shave your unwanted mole to the skins surface.

With such pinpoint accuracy, this method makes it possible to remove lesions, lumps, bumps and moles with less chance of causing a scar.

With the treatment area under local anaesthetic, the electrode removes the mole and coagulates the skin at the same time, resulting in minimal to no bleeding.

A dressing is then applied to the site, and a scab will form where the mole was removed. This should be changed once a day for 7 days.

This scab will fall off after about a week, leaving behind red/pink skin that clears over the coming days to weeks.

Mole Removal Aftercare

For the results of your mole removal to be optimal, it’s crucial that you follow the correct at-home aftercare following your procedure.

The steps are simple but important.

  • Keep the wound covered for 7 days with Duoderm extra-thin dressing.
  • Shower with the dressing on for the first 7 days.
  • Change your dressing daily. We suggest after your evening shower.
    • Depending on your individual assessment, your doctor may suggest applying an antibiotic ointment with each dressing change. They will write a script at the time of your consultation which you can collect from a pharmacy.
    • Your doctor may also suggest you wear the dressing for up to 2 weeks depending on the part of the body treated.
  • You may choose to have LED light therapy 3 times a week for 1 month to reduce the risk of scarring and speed healing further.
    • This can start 3 days post treatment.
  • Don’t expose the treated area to direct sun for 4 weeks. This increases the risk of unwanted pigment change and scarring.
  • Once the area has healed, it’s vital that you protect the new skin with SPF 50+ sunscreen or zinc.
  • After 4 weeks you can massage the area with a simple moisturiser to reduce the chance of scar tissue forming.
    • Massage with clean hands, and simple moisturiser using mild to moderate pressure for 2 minutes at a time up to twice a day. The goal is to break up any scar tissue forming.
  • Some patients choose to use a silicon based gel to reduce the risk even further. We recommend Stratamed, which comes in your aftercare pack or your doctor may suggest Stratacel depending on your unique circumstances, which can be purchased in clinic. This should start 2 weeks post treatment and continue twice a day for 1 month.

Mole Removal Recovery Time

Overall, from the time of your procedure, right through until the point of being completely and fully healed, the timeframe is generally about 6–8 weeks. Note however the wound remodelling process takes up to 12 months at a microscopic level.

The recovery period requiring care and attention is approximately two weeks – this is the timeframe for your immediate healing and aftercare following the mole removal.

Following the two-week period where your treated area is doing its primary healing, the next few weeks are where the skin begins to do its long-term healing.
