How Are Nasolabial Folds Treated?

Nasolabial fold filler is a simple, safe procedure when performed in the hands of an expert. After your comprehensive bespoke consultation, an explanation of the nasolabial fold procedure and relevant risks, numbing cream will be placed to minimise any discomfort. Once numb, the area to be treated is cleaned with antiseptic solution or alcohol swab.

Our injectors then have two choices in how to place your premium grade dermal filler aesthetically improve your nasolabial folds.

  1. Needle – Using an ultra-thin needle, the folds are filled with linear threads just under the skins surface until naturally augmented. This usually requires only half a ml of filler per side. Occasionally, your injector may choose to place your dermal filler deep at 90 degrees to the skin at the junction of the fold and nose to better augment this area.
  2. Cannula – A small injection using a thin 30-gauge needle of local anaesthetic is injected into the skin and then a fine needle makes a small hole in the skin. A blunt cannula is inserted in the small opening to the skin made by a needle. The cannula gently glides through the subcutaneous fat just under the skin and careful filling of the nasolabial folds is then accomplished. Many injectors believe this is the safest way to fill the nasolabial folds owing to the blunt nature of the cannula, which has far less risk of penetrating or injuring underlying vessels and nerves.

Depending on your personalised assessment, your expert injector may suggest other treatments to help improve the nasolabial fold area including:

  • Cheek filler to help lift the nasolabial folds
  • Thread-lifting to help lift sagging mid facial tissues
  • PDO threads to lift and smooth nasolabial folds, especially those that extend down around the side of the mouth
  • Skin resurfacing laser
  • Particularly severe folds in patients wanting long term results may benefit from consultation with one of our leading plastic surgeons

The Benefits of Nasolabial Fold Dermal Fillers

As we age, we may notice areas of our face that we are not so happy with. Creases can appear around the mouth where previously the skin was smooth and can be more noticeable in some of us than others at a particular age. This is particularly true when genetics and lifestyle factors such as smoking, and sun exposure come into play. Whilst lines and wrinkles are a natural part of the ageing process, it does not mean that we must accept them. Nasolabial fold fillers offer a solution that can also assist with smoothing out unwanted nasolabial folds and return a lifted, hydrated and rejuvenated look to the skin.

Benefits of Nasolabial Fold Dermal Fillers include:

  • Increased collagen in the skin which helps to add volume to the targeted area
  • Overall lift of the nasolabial fold in the most natural way possible
  • Minimal discomfort, downtime and side effects
  • Non-invasive
  • Immediate results
  • Youthful, more rejuvenated appearance

How Does Nasolabial Fold Filler Work?

Nasolabial folds appear due to loss of underlying facial fat and sagging of the mid facial tissues. Nasal Fold Filler works by replacing lost volume to the area so that these hollows and deep lines appear naturally smoother.

Dermal fillers are made up of a sugar naturally present in your skin called hyaluronic acid.

When hyaluronic acid dermal filler is placed in the nasolabial fold, the area is volumised, folds are naturally smoothed leaving you with a refreshed youthful appearance to the nasal fold region.

How Many mls of Filler Will I Need?

The dose of dermal filler required for nasolabial folds depends on the patient’s facial structure and the desired results of the patient.

After a thorough consultation, one of trusted doctors or nurses will assess the area and decide the appropriate dosage and type of dermal filler to be used.

Generally, half a ml of dermal filler per side would be enough for those with mild to moderate nasolabial folds. Those with more severe nasolabial folds may benefit from 1ml per side. We usually recommend starting with 0.5ml per side and reviewing in 2-4 weeks to see if further treatment is necessary.
