The Blog What Causes Back Acne in Females & How to Treat It

Medically reviewed by: Mary Chigwidden, Senior Cosmetic Nurse, September 2026

In brief:

  • Back acne in women is often linked to hormonal changes, genetics, sweat and lifestyle factors
  • The skin on the back has a high concentration of oil-producing glands, making it prone to breakouts at any age
  • A range of professional treatment options may be discussed at consultation, from LED light therapy to laser skin resurfacing
  • Any back acne that is severe, persistent, or changing should be assessed by a GP or dermatologist before cosmetic treatment is considered

For many, facial acne is a common concern as we go through life and hormonal changes. While back acne is  less talked about, it’s not uncommon for individuals to develop it.

While we may link acne to hygiene or health choices, back acne can actually affect any gender or age group. This includes women, who may experience acne breakouts differently from men, but still require reliable treatment methods.

Nadia Radi, Skin & Laser Therapist at Contour Clinics with 18 years experience , advises: “What you do at home with skincare between treatments matters almost more than the treatment itself. Some of my recommendations are to always shower after exercise or excess sweating, and not to pick at your acne.”

This guide covers the common causes of back acne in women and the professional treatment options to discuss at consultation.

What is Back Acne?

What is Back Acne?

Back acne, or “bacne” as it’s widely known, is exactly what it says – acne that develops on the back.

Pimples, blackheads and/or whiteheads develop on the back, leaving the skin’s texture uneven and irritated. Much like facial acne, the skin on the back can also become oily, leading to acne scars if left untreated.

While breakouts are often thought to occur during puberty, adult acne is actually quite common and nothing to be ashamed of. This includes severe to mild back acne, which can occur at any age and in anyone.

How Common is Female Back Acne?

Although teenagers and men are more likely to develop acne, it’s not uncommon for women to also experience mild to severe acne. While some may only experience acne outbreaks during puberty, many women will likely continue to breakout during their adult life.

Acne signs may appear on the face, neck, chest, shoulders, bottom and back. Symptoms and severity may differ between individuals, but acknowledging back acne is the first step towards treating and managing it.

Symptoms of back acne

Symptoms of Back Acne

Regardless of your gender or age, there are common symptoms associated with back acne.

You may experience one or more of the following back acne symptoms:

  • Red bumps that may be inflamed or sore to the touch
  • Blackheads, showing a buildup of dead skin cells, dirt and debris
  • Whiteheads, which are pimples with white centres made up of pus, oil and debris
  • Sensations of pain and/or tenderness on the back
  • Deep, pus-filled pimples under the skin called cystic acne
  • Painful nodules that cause hard lumps under the skin, otherwise known as nodular acne
  • Rough or bumpy skin texture
  • Redness or irritation across the skin
  • Dark spots or acne scars, once the breakout clears up

It’s best to contact a doctor if your back acne is severe, persistent or inflamed. Additionally, if you notice signs of an infection, such as a fever, schedule a medical appointment immediately for treatment.

What are the Main Causes of Back Acne in Women?

What are the Main Causes of Back Acne in Women?

There are several reasons why you may develop acne on your back. However, adult women may be more susceptible to dealing with acne, bacne in particular, due to lifestyle factors and hormones.

If you’re a woman living with bacne, it may be due to one or more of the following causes:

Hormonal Changes

For women, there are numerous stages of life and bodily changes to face. Each of these progressions includes hormonal changes, which may lead to acne worse than that during teenage years.

Notable reasons for females to experience a change in hormone levels include:

  • Menstruation cycle
  • Puberty
  • Menopause
  • Pregnancy
  • Oral contraceptives

During these times, women are more likely to produce high levels of hormones that tend to create excess oil in the skin. When oil-producing glands become overfilled, it promotes acne bacteria to grow at the site.

In the case of back acne, it’s the skin pores along the back that become clogged with oily substances and bacteria. Over time, this leads to breakouts of whiteheads, blackheads, and pimples.

Genetics

Some women may be genetically disposed to experience back acne. If you have a family history of breakouts, especially persistent or severe acne, you may be more likely to experience it yourself.

Diet

It’s believed that there’s a strong relationship between our skin health and the foods we eat. Essential nutrients like vitamin A and D help strengthen the skin, so a deficiency of certain foods may impact skin health.

To achieve a balanced diet, it’s recommended to include the following in your daily meals:

  • Fruit
  • Grains and cereals
  • Vegetables and legumes
  • Milk, yogurt, cheese, or other dairy products
  • Sources of protein like poultry, lean meat, tofu, eggs, seeds, and nuts

Stress

When you experience high anxiety or stress levels, your body produces the hormone known as cortisol. In reaction to the increased cortisol, skin pores produce an oil called sebum. It’s secreted by the sebaceous glands, which are attached to hair follicles – that’s why most of the body and face can develop acne.

While this substance helps maintain the skin’s natural barrier, too much sebum can clog pores. Over time, clogged pores combine with debris and acne bacteria to cause a breakout.

Sweat

While sweaty skin generally isn’t an issue, prolonged periods of time without cleansing can lead to irritated and clogged pores. Trapped sweat, usually caused by tight clothing, can cause acne to flare up or worsen over time.

If you’re prone to excessive sweating, it may be worth wearing loose-fitting clothing and showering often. .

Hygiene Practices

When your skin isn’t regularly cleaned, dead skin cells, sweat, makeup, dirt and debris can build up. Keeping your skin clean is one of the most straightforward ways to  prevent back acne.

It’s important to shower after exercising or any activity that causes you to sweat. Combining this with acne-cleansing washes or antibacterial soaps can help to treat back acne before it worsens.

Irregularly cleaning bed linen, towels or clothing can also increase the likelihood of developing bacne. If you commonly wear workout clothes and exercise in them, ensure they are thoroughly cleaned often, so it doesn’t exacerbate your skin.

Hair and Skincare Products

Certain hair and body products may increase your risk of clogging skin pores and leading to acne. Always check that your skincare products match your skin type and don’t cause irritation.

Those prone to acne may need to consider oily skin products, which may lessen the amount of sebum produced and unclog pores.

Friction & Skin Irritability

Tight clothing or non-breathable fabrics like polyster may create sweaty skin that worsens acne. When the skin is also rubbed by fabrics, such as backpack straps, the friction can encourage irritation levels that cause back acne.

Medications

Certain medications, such as corticosteroids, are known to cause bacne due to hormonal changes. This applies to both topical and oral medications, so be sure to check the label or with your doctor for known side effects.

Ultimately, identifying why your acne develops on your back is crucial to preventing skin damage. When you know the cause, you can begin developing a reliable treatment plan that’s best suited to your skin and its condition.

LED Light Therapy for back acne

Professional Treatments for Female Back Acne

When it comes to acne treatments, there’s a wide array to consider if you contact a trustworthy cosmetic clinic. For women, many of these options help not only to kill acne bacteria, but also resurface the skin to reduce the appearance of uneven skin.

Learn your options below or book a complimentary consultation with your local cosmetic doctor for a skin assessment:

LED Light Therapy

Renew your skin’s health and overall appearance with targeted application of LED light therapy. This treatment uses light at specific wavelengths to address certain skin concerns, including acne across the back.

Medical-grade devices are used to calm skin irritation while also encouraging collagen production. This aims to help calm skin irritation and support the skin’s natural processes.

Fractional Lasers

A minimally invasive treatment that’s used for precise targeting of the skin’s surface, fractional lasers may be used to treat back acne, along with other concerns such as an uneven skin texture, fine lines, loss of elasticity and more.

It’s a holistic approach to your skin’s health that can be tailored when your acne is diagnosed during a cosmetic consultation.

Skin Resurfacing

Another type of laser therapy, skin resurfacing offers personalised treatment for skin concerns like wrinkles, pigmentation, scarring and even excessive back acne. With multiple laser options available, a cosmetic doctor can easily find the most suitable match for your skin type, tone and current acne status.

Acne Scar Remodelling

If you have acne scars across your back,  your skin may benefit from remodelling services. All types of acne scars, including depressed or rolling scarring, may be resurfaced for a smoother skin texture and tone.

Experienced doctors identify your acne type and may create a schedule of physical treatments tailored to you. This may include a subcision for more intense scarring. These acne treatments may also reduce symptoms of redness and pigmentation, while also stimulating collagen production.

Chemical Peels

While chemical peels are commonly used to treat facial acne, some types may be adjusted for back application. These peels exfoliate the skin and encourage dead skin cells to turn over, making way for a healthier appearance with reduced acne presence.
