Vein Glues with Contour Clinics

Seal off and treat Varicose Veins with our innovative, minimally invasive closure system performed in clinic by a specialist doctor.

All review appointments post procedure are complimentary.

What are Vein Glues and what are they made from?

VenaSeal, Vein Off and VeinBlock are different brands of Medical SuperGlue. They are all made from the same material called Cyanoacrylate. This type of glue has been safely used for the last 40 years to repair skin wounds and to seal of diseased arteries. However, it has only been over the last 10 years that the technology has been used in treating varicose veins.

How do Vein Glues work?

The VenaSeal procedure involves injecting a small amount of VenaSeal vein glue into the diseased vein through a small catheter. The catheter is strategically inserted into the vein with the assistance of ultrasound guided imagery. Once the diseased vein is closed, blood is immediately re-routed through other healthy veins in the leg.

Unlike other treatments, VenaSeal does not require a nerve block or large volumes of anaesthesia. Furthermore, there are no pre-procedure medications involved and patients can return to their normal activities right after the treatment. Unlike other heat-based procedures such as endovenous laser or radiofrequency ablation, with VenaSeal there is no risk of skin burns or nerve damage. VenaSeal does not require any immediate post-treatment pain medication or uncomfortable compression stockings.

What do Veins Glues Treat?

Medical Super Glues are medical adhesive used to treat varicose veins in two key areas:

  • The Great Saphenous Vein
  • The perforator vein system.

The lower body has two main vein systems taken blood back to the heart. The Deep Vein System and the Superficial surface Vein System. The Deep Veins return the blood directly back to the heart. The superficial surface veins drain into the deep veins which then taken it back to the heart. The Perforator veins connect the two systems of veins: the deep vein system and the surface veins in the limbs. The Great Saphenous Vein is the main superficial vein. When the connecting perforator veins are healthy and working well, they return deoxygenated blood to the heart by connecting the surface veins to deeper veins. When the one-way valves within perforator veins are defective, blood can leak backwards, creating varicose veins in surface veins.

The advances in technology mean specialist doctors can now deliver a precise amount of medical superglue under ultrasound guidance to the diseased veins. This instantly seals the vein and blocks the permanent leakage of blood between the two-vein system. The targets are the great saphenous vein and its branches of perforator veins.

Like the other new vein procedures such as sclerotherapy and EVLA the goal of Vein Glues, is to seal the varicose vein shut. The body will naturally reroute the blood through healthy veins in the area, while reabsorbing the vein that has been shut off. The reabsorption causes the vein to disappear.

As with the other procedures, Vein Glues are minimally invasive, meaning it involves only a tiny incision or a needle. The procedure is performed in our purpose built rooms at Contour Clinics, without the need to go to a hospital or have an anaesthetic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Treatment Painful?

When the glue is injected into a vein, it releases a small amount of heat, like getting “super glue” on your fingers as a child. This causes a small burning sensation that does not last longer than 10 seconds. This is generally very tolerable, and most people do not feel anything. Most people refer to the treatment being pain free.

What Happens during the Procedure?

  • When you arrive at our Clinic you will be greeted and taken to one of our purpose-built rooms to undertake the procedure
  • Our Specialist Doctor will use local anaesthetic to numb the area where the catheter will enter.
  • Under Ultrasound Guidance the problem vein will be mapped out along its entire path.
  • The next step is a catheter will be inserted into the vein through a tiny incision all while under the guidance of ultrasound.
  • The Medical Glue is then administered through what the call a feeding gun placed at the end of the catheter. Small amounts of glue are slowly administered into the vein.
  • After the procedure, a bandage is placed over the incision area while the vein glue seals the vein shut.

Do I require follow up?

Yes, all patients will require a follow up visit within 4 weeks after Vein Glue treatment. During the follow up treatment which another scan is performed to make sure the treatment has worked. Any spider veins or branched veins may be treated with ultrasound guided sclerotherapy at this time if necessary.

What happens to the treated vein?

The vein that has been treated will be sealed during the treatment. This vein will be reabsorbed by the body over time. As we have millions of veins in the legs the blood will naturally be rerouted to a different vein.

How effective is the treatment?

Studies to date show extremely good results, based on 95% – 98% closure of treated veins. This impressive success rate adds to the extra benefit of significantly reduced complications and extremely little to zero downtime, which makes is a great alternative for other procedures.

What is the Recovery Process?

The whole process takes around 45 minutes to complete the treatment.

  • As there is no large amounts of anaesthetic, multiple injections, or medications the recovery process is very quick and there is usually no downtime. People can resume their normal activities immediately.
  • We recommend avoiding strenuous exercise, heavy weights, running for at least 5 days after the procedure.
  • The bandage used at the end of the treatment can be removed the following day.
  • Results take around 6 weeks to see the full reduction in the appearance of the varicose veins.

Is the procedure Safe?

This is one of the safest medical procedures for treating varicose veins. There is almost no risk of skin or nerve injury and the glue sets in immediately, binding the veins. No stitches or bandages needed. For extra care, we perform a duplex ultrasound at the end.

What are the common side effects from the treatment?

The main side effect is soreness and inflammation of the treatment area for up to a week after the treatment. This can be easily treated with anti-inflammatory medication.
