permanent removal of excess fat What is Under Chin Liposuction

Under Chin Liposuction has become extremely popular over the past 10 years. It is an advanced sculpting technique to remove excess fat under the chin and on the neck. The under chin fat can be extremely difficult to remove and a persistent problem for many people despite their best efforts at diet and exercise. For some, exercise and diet can have little to no effect on this area. Targeted fat removal in this area means the chin and neck area can be permanently reshaped and a youthful contour restored.

Chin Liposuction is a surgical technique using a long hollow tube called a cannula. The cannula is inserted into the fat layer under the skin. Pressure or suction is then applied through the cannula and then fat is suctioned and removed. The surgeon can sculpt and contour the chin and neck area through the removal of this fat.

At Contour Surgical our aim is to bring the entire body into alignment. When working in the face and neck we take a unique approach to making sure the area is in perfect balance and symmetry and in harmony with the rest of the face. Our experienced surgeons combine their many years of experience with a unique ability to sculpt the neck and chin much like an artist sculpts a masterpiece.

Considerably shorter recovery time than other liposuction procedures The Procedure

Liposuction on the chin area can be more difficult than other areas of the body because of where the fat is located. It is best to make sure ONLY an experienced Plastic Surgeon performs the procedure.

The procedure starts off with tiny incisions being made in the skin just under the ear and under the chin. A local tumescent anaesthetic solution is then infiltrated under the skin and into the fat layer of the treatment area. This solution contains saline, local anaesthetic and adrenaline. The adrenaline helps reduces bleeding, bruising and swelling. The tumescent solution expands the fatty layer allowing for an easy passage of the cannula. The cannula is passed through the fat layer removing fat in a repeated systematic process. Suction is provided through a machine or syringe to aid in the removal of the fat.

The desired result is very reliant on the surgeon’s ability to assess the level for fat thickness and evenness. The level of aesthetic knowledge and training as well as the unique ability to contour the body and bring it into perfect alignment. At Contour Surgical we only use experienced Plastic Surgeons to do our Liposuction Procedures. All of our Plastic Surgeons have at least 10-15 years of Post-Graduate Plastic Surgery training and are fellows of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons. This provides our patients with the highest degree of comfort and the safety that they are being treated by the most qualified and experienced surgeons that the country has to offer.

If required, we use dissolvable sutures to close liposuction entry sites. These stitches are buried under the skin, allowing for perfect skin edge opposition, leading to a lower risk of scarring then visible external stitches. In some cases, your Plastic Surgeon will opt to leave your liposuction entry sites open for drainage of the anaesthetic solution.

A special compression garment is worn immediately after the procedure. This is put on immediately post procedure, before you awake from general anaesthetic. The compression garment helps reduce swelling, bruising, and importantly help the skin retract after the removal of the fat and will remain on for 1 week post procedure.

post surgery Your Chin Liposuction Recovery

Your procedure will be performed in an accredited private hospital operating theatre. You will return home on the same day of the procedure.
After surgery has finished you will be seen by one of our nurses and they will make sure you are awake and comfortable. Our nurse will place a compression garment under the chin area once you are comfortable. The compression garment will help minimise swelling, bruising, and bleeding. The bandage provides support and comfort and holds the treated areas of the body in place. It is important to remember the garment is vital for the healing process and outcome of the procedure. The bandage should be worn continually for the first 72 hours after the procedure.
The recovery process from chin liposuction is much quicker than other forms of liposuction and you can return to your normal activities in 1-2 days after the procedure. You will generally have some mild bruising and discomfort. We will help the recovery process by facilitating lymphatic massage referrals if required.

Patients are encouraged to walk and move around as often as possible post-surgery. This will assist in eliminate the stiffness experienced after your procedure. You will most likely notice that fluid will leak from the incision sites. The fluid will be clear or slightly red in colour. This is the tumescent solution and is no cause for alarm. The leaking usually lasts for about 48 hours. Postoperative leaking from the surgical sites is completely normal and should be expected.

Swelling and bruising start on the second day. Most of this swelling and bruising will go away inside two weeks. Patients will see their final of results in four to six weeks.

You will need to attend a post-surgery follow up several days after your procedure and then again at three months post procedure. Lymphatic massages post-surgery may aid recovery and reduce swelling. We recommend two massages twice per week for the first two weeks and can facilitate massages on request.

What happens to the neck and under chin area with age?

Aging causes a loss of collagen and elastin production in the body. This results in visible changes to the face and neck. One of the most common signs of ageing is the appearance of muscle bands on the neck region, the development of sagging skin and fat deposits under the chin. Unfortunately, the ageing process is unavoidable, and everybody will experience these changes over time.

The neck contains the muscle known as the platysma band. This muscle can begin to separate and descend downward in the neck with age. This leads to the appearance of the vertical bands that run down the neck. As the platysma band starts to separate the skin will sage more and there is more room for fat to accumulate in the open space. The result is often a double chin, a heavy aged looking neck, and a poorly defined jawline. If this is of concern to you, liposuction or a neck lift may be the most appropriate treatment solution for you. The most appropriate treatment plan as it pertains to your unique circumstances will be discussed with your specialist Plastic Surgeon at your comprehensive consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the procedure take to complete?

Under Chin Liposuction Procedures take around one hour to complete.

Will I feel any pain during my under-chin liposuction procedure?

No. You will be under general anaesthetic and will not feel any pain during the procedure.

Are the results from under chin liposuction permanent?

Once you reach your late teenage years your body has the total amount of fat cells it will ever have. These fat cells can then only ever expand or shrink in size.

Liposuction permanently removes fat cells in the treatment area. This means you can no longer store fat to the same degree in the treated area. However, this does not mean you can’t gain weight in other areas. In order to maintain your results, it is recommended to follow a healthy diet and exercise plan.

Will I have scarring?

Liposuction involves making incisions in the skin, which means small marks that fade overtime will be left post procedure. However significant scarring is rare. The incisions made for the procedure are always small and in discreet locations.

At Contour Surgical we offer best in class laser treatments to reduce any scarring after the procedure. We provide a complimentary scar removal treatment for all our liposuction patients. We find that with a combination of expert placement of liposuction entry sites, skilful management of the sites post-operatively and complimentary skin resurfacing laser most scarring is removed or fades to become hardly noticeable.

When do I see my results?

You will notice an improvement immediately after your chin liposuction procedure. However, over the next 48 hours you will have swelling and it will take up to 2-4 weeks for the swelling to subside and the skin to tighten and retract. From 4 weeks onwards you can expect your results to gradually improve with full results being seen at around 6 weeks. In some cases full results may take up to 3 months.

What are the Risks & Complications of Liposuction to the Under Chin Area?

All surgical procedures carry risk. It is for this reason that you should carefully consider who performs your liposuction procedure. Liposuction when done correctly by an experienced surgeon is a safe and effective procedure that can produce outstanding and life changing results.

Complications of liposuction include, but are not limited to:

– Discomfort post procedure
– Bruising
– Haematoma (a collection of blood under the skin)
– Infection uncommon due to a sterile field being maintained during the procedure and antibiotics given after the procedure
– Persistent Swelling
– A Seroma or Fluid accumulation under the skin
– Deep Vein Thrombosis (this is a complication from any surgery where movement post-surgery is reduced. It is extremely rare)
– Skin Irregularities. This occurs from poor liposuction technique by either over or under liposuctioning or by liposuctioning at the wrong skin depth.
– Missed Areas – Occurs when the area surrounding a large area is missed
– Skin Laxity – If a surgeon over liposuctions a particular the skin in this area may not be able to retract enough. If the skin is extremely loose to start with the risk of this increases.

When choosing liposuction, it is always recommended to choose a skilled experienced Plastic Surgeon.

Can I exercise after Under Chin Liposuction?

A common question from patients is “When can I resume exercise post chin liposuction”?

We recommend walking and moving around 48 hours after your surgery. Light cardio and exercise can be resumed after 2 days, and then more intense workouts can resume after two weeks. Full training is not recommended until 4 weeks after your liposuction procedure.

Can I drink alcohol after liposuction?

We recommend not drinking alcohol post-surgery for safety reasons because of its interaction with pain medications and antibiotics.

It is recommended to avoid drinking for at least 5 days after surgery to prevent any chance of excessive bruising or bleeding.
