Main causes of loose/sagging skin

There are many factors that can contribute to the sagginess and loose skin on your face and neck.

  • Aging is the most common cause of loose skin. As we age, our body generates less collagen and natural elastin, which keeps your skin tight. Unfortunately, aging is unpreventable, however can be managed with the appropriate protocols.
  • Sun Exposure causes DNA mutations in the skin that can lead to premature aging. UV radiation damages skin from the epidermis layer down deep into the dermis. Collagen and elastin fibres are damaged as a result, leaving behind skin that cannot recover naturally.
  • Smoking nicotine and other chemicals found in cigarettes contribute to wrinkles and premature aging. These chemicals cause blood vessels to narrow, reducing oxygen flow and nutrients to skin cells. Without such nutrients skin cells can die, effecting the production of collagen and elastin in your body.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the procedure?

A neck lift is performed under general anaesthesia. You will need to be fasted for about 4-6 hours prior to surgery to avoid complications with any anaesthetic medication.

The procedure will take place at one of our surgical facilities. The procedure will start the first incision at your hairline and will follow down and around your ear. Fat may be sculpted or redistributed from your jowls and neck. Your tissue underlying your neck skin, is repositioned and your platysma muscle is tightened. Your skin is then re draped over your uplifted contours an excess skin is removed. The second incision begins under your chin and is required to remove all excess fat from this area and for repair of your muscles.

Your surgeon will then close the incisions with sutures and compression dressings. Sutures may be dissolvable or may need to be removed 5 days post-surgery. One healed, the incision lines from the neck are well concealed within your hairline and your natural contours of your ear.

When should I expect to see results?

Results from a surgical neck lift can take up to several weeks to months for swelling to fully subside and up to six months for incision lines to fade.

Are the results of a neck lift permanent?

The results of your neck lift will be long lasting, however they won’t be permanent. Surgery cannot stop the aging process, which means over time the appearance of your neck will always change. If you happen to gain or lose a significant amount of weight, it can affect the results of your surgery.

It is crucial that you continue to look after your skin post neck lift surgery. This will ensure longevity of your neck lift. Clinically proven skincare recommended is made up of antioxidants, retinoids, anti-aging properties, hydrating moisturiser and SPF will maintain the skin elasticity and increase collagen levels, increasing the longevity of your neck lift.

Will there be scars?

Scarring is unfortunately inevitable. Here at Contour Clinics we offer complimentary laser scar removal therapy to aid in the disappearance of the scar if you find it is noticeable.

What is the recovery process?

After your surgery, you are allowed to go home accompanied by another adult when the anaesthetic medication wears off. Overnight hospital stays are usually not mandatory, however we may advise that a hospital stay is needed depending on the severity of your procedure.

You will be required to stay home and take about 1 – 2 weeks off work to rest and recover at home. You will experience swelling, bruising and redness during the recovery period. This will subside over 5 – 7 days. We will give you a compression garment to wear that will aid in reducing the swelling. Sleeping with your head elevated and using ice packs will also help reduce swelling and bruising.
