The masculine aesthetic Creating strong, chiselled, sharp, masculine features

During early development all human faces essentially begin as feminine. Exposure to testosterone during puberty slowly coarsens facial structures to provide a more masculine appearance.

Some of the hallmarks of facial masculinity include:

  • Flatter eyebrows
  • Prominent brow (frontal bossing)
  • Slightly longer/wider nose
  • Squarer chin
  • Angled, projected jawlines
  • Chiselled cheekbones, which are flatter, but more angulated than females

Strong and chiselled features The TOP three areas dermal fillers can be used to masculinise the face

Dermal fillers can be used to shape, contour and masculinise any variety of facial features. The three MOST common facial areas targeted to masculinise the male face include:

Chiselled Cheekbones

  • This is an area, that if done wrong can feminise a male cheek. It is imperative that the apex of the male cheek is lower, more towards the midline and subtly defined. The cheek bone itself should be chiselled, rather than full and smooth.

Svelte, Angled Jawline

  • The angle of the jaw should be projected inline with the cheekbone when viewed from the front. The jawline angle should be 130 degrees and its position when viewed front on should be inline with the corner of the mouth.

Squared-off Chin

  • The ideal male chin should be squarer and wider than the female chin. The ideal width should be roughly inline with the corners of the mouth, although small variations to this are still aesthetic.

The science of a masculine jawline How to create a masculine jawline aesthetic

The ideal male jawline has the following textbook characteristics:

  • The angle of the jawline should be roughly 140 degrees
  • The angle should be at a height in line with the mouth when looking from front-on
  • The degree of slope from the angle to the chin should follow those of the cheeks and be 65-75 degrees
  • The width of the jawline angle should be in line with the width of the face/cheeks

Frequently Asked Questions

How do jawline fillers work to masculinise the jaw?

Dermal fillers add volume to the jawline anywhere from the chin to the ear. They can masculinise the face by contouring a a strong jawline angle, carving a sharp jawline body, augmenting a weak chin and squaring-off an overly pointy chin.

Does jawline filler help with a double chin?

Yes. Often placing jawline/chin filler can significantly improve the appearance of a double chin. Extending the chin causes a change in the angle at which under-chin fat sits. This almost always makes it appear much less prominent.

Combining jawline fillers with under-chin fat sculpting (CoolSculpting or under-chin fat dissolving injections) is a very popular choice. This provides an amazing jawline and under-chin contour that gives you the confidence to take selfies from any angle.

See more about under-chin sculpting treatment.

How many mls of filler will I need for masculine chin and jawline sculpting?

We individualise all of our treatments to fit a patient’s desired outcome. Most patients will start with 2ml each side, then review at their complimentary post-treatment follow-up appointment. If required, more volume can be added.

Men usually need anywhere from 3-8ml of filler depending on the results desired.

Does jawline sculpting hurt?

At Contour Clinics, we pride ourselves on being the cosmetic injectable experts. Using the latest in injecting technique, filler treatments with our practitioners are completed with minimal discomfort to you.

We only use fillers with a built-in local anaesthetic. This combined with ice packs, topical anaesthetic (numbing cream) and the option of happy gas (Entonox) make jawline sculpting fillers at Contour Clinics some of the most comfortable available.

How long does jawline sculpting last?

Jawline sculpting treatments last between 8 and 12 months depending on patient characteristics and amount injected. Our fillers are ethically sourced from reputable pharmaceutical companies. We do not use cheap fillers.

How are jawline fillers injected?

Here at Contour Clinics we prefer to use cannula rather than needle for the placement of jawline filler. Premium dermal fillers are placed along the edge and angle of the jawline to provide a sharp, crisp definition between the cheek and neck.

Do jawline fillers cause bruising and swelling?

Most patients leave the clinic with minimal evidence of bruising. Swelling is common and is usually mild and easily treated with icing.

Can jawline filler move?

No, jawline filler will stay exactly where it is placed in the jawline.

What to expect after masculinising chin and jawline filler?

Jawline and chin fillers are often tender after treatment. This is usually described as 2/10 discomfort. This lasts 3-7 days at most. Bruising is uncommon and often short lived.

Results are immediate! You should notice an obvious change to your side profile and a significant sharpening of your jawline.

Results look best at 2 weeks once swelling has completely resolved and the filler has had time to integrate in with the skin.

What can I do to reduce swelling after masculinising chin and jawline fillers?

Following these measures post treatment can help to reduce swelling:

– Icing 15 minutes every hour on the day of treatment
– Sleeping on two pillows, this helps to decrease swelling
– Do not rub the area
– Try to sleep on your back to avoid applying pressure to the face
– Avoid strenuous exercise for 48 hours
– Avoid hot saunas for 48 hours post treatment
– Avoid alcohol for 24 hours post treatment

Follow-up

Your satisfaction and safety is our priority.

To ensure optimal results are achieved you may attend a review appointment to assess your progress at two weeks.

How do male cheeks differ from female cheeks?

Ideal male cheekbones are flatter towards the midline, but more chiselled to the side rather than their female counterparts. Their point of maximal projection is lower and more towards the midline than female cheekbones.

How are male cheekbone fillers performed?

To help with sculpting, we prefer the use of cannula to deliver filler exactly where it is needed.

A cannula is a long blunt needle that glides through the subcutaneous fat to deliver filler precisely and safely.

What kind of fillers are used to augment male cheekbones?

Choosing the right type of filler is essential in achieving the desired masculine sculpted cheekbones.

We prefer a thicker, more bone-mimicking filler in this part of the face. These fillers have a higher degree of cross-linking and greater hyaluronic acid concentration.

Due to TGA regulations, we are unfortunately unable to share the brand names of these fillers. Feel free to email or direct message us on social media for an overview of the products we use.

Are male cheekbone fillers safe?

Yes. This is one of the safer areas of the face to inject with dermal fillers.

Delivering dermal filler via cannula, the risk of complication is further decreased.

What is the recovery time for male cheekbone fillers?

Male cheekbone fillers cause minimal swelling, and the occasional rare bruise.

Most of our patients can return to their daily routine immediately after treatment.

We suggest you refrain from intense exercise, and heavy alcohol consumption on the day of treatment to reduce swelling. Icing the area post treatment is also helpful to minimise recovery time.

What are Anti-Wrinkle Injections?

Anti-Wrinkle Injections consist of a purified version of a naturally occurring protein. When injected into “wrinkle-causing” muscles, these proteins work by temporarily blocking nerve signals to the muscle. This controlled weakening reduces muscle movement, causing the wrinkles over the muscles to become smooth and disappear. They have been safely used for over 30 years on over 100 million patients.

What is the difference between male and female anti-wrinkle injections?

Males on average need 25-50% more anti wrinkle product when treating facial wrinkles, owing to increased muscle strength.

There are several differences depending on the area treated:

  • Frown lines: Often males choose not to treat this area, as they feel a strong frown is a masculinising feature.
  • Crows feet: The lines around the eyes can be an attractive feature on a male. We recommend doing small doses in this area to maintain some movement to ensure a masculine appearance persists after treatment.
  • Forehead lines: Care needs to be taken to ensure the brow is not raised at its outer aspects. Strong masculine brows are flat, without an obvious outer brow flare. Males are often also heavier in their brows. Excessive treatment of the forehead in those with a heavy brow can worsen heaviness and lead to a sensation of facial fatigue. Care must be taken to avoid this complication by not injecting too close to the brow.

Why do wrinkles appear?

Wrinkles appear over time because of persistent tension in the small muscles of facial expression. Contraction of these muscles cause the skin to bunch up over the muscle, causing wrinkles.

  • “Frown lines” (the lines between one’s eyes) are caused by tension in the procerus and corrugator supercillii muscles
  • “Crow’s feet” (smile lines around outside of eyes) are caused by tension in the outer portion of the orbicularis oculi muscles
  • “Forehead lines” are caused by tension in the frontalis muscle

Who can perform Anti-Wrinkle Injections?

In Australia, only a doctor or registered nurse under the supervision of a medical doctor may inject muscle relaxants and most dermal fillers. For a safe treatment and optimum results, only a fully trained, highly experienced practitioner should administer cosmetic injections. At Contour Clinics, all treatments are performed or supervised by an on-site doctor.

Our Medical Director Dr Josh Wall is the head trainer for the worlds largest dermal filler and Anti-Wrinkle training provider Dermamedical. He is one of Sydneys most experienced and expert injectors, graduating top of medical school, speaking at all major cosmetic conferences, commenting for leading womens magazines and publishing in multiple peer reviewed medical journals.

What is a good age to start anti-wrinkle injections?

Most patients start Anti-Wrinkle injections in their late 20s or early 30s. This ensures lines never form in the first place.

Some patients start earlier, but this is for aesthetic reasons rather than anti-ageing. Some of our patients feel that their frown lines make them look angry when they are not. Treating this area removes frown lines, giving a generally happier appearance. Treating the frown lines also stops squinting when in outdoor photos.

How much do anti-wrinkle treatments cost for men?

Males on average require slightly more anti-wrinkle product than females owing to their increased muscle strength.

Injections come in 3 brands.

Here at Contour Clinics we only use the most popular two brands, as we find these are by far the most effective. Beware clinics offering you cheap products. You may find you get what you paid for.

Anti-wrinkle A = $3.99

Anti-wrinkle B = $12.99

To take Anti-wrinkle A as an example, the rough average cost per area:

  • Forehead = $99-159
  • Frown lines = $159-199
  • Crows feet = $159-199

This is an average cost based on usual dosing for the average female. It may be more or less expensive depending on your facial muscle strength.

You may also choose to purchase a package:

2 area package: $329

3 area package: $449

See our prices page for more information

How long do Anti-Wrinkle Injections last?

The results last between 3 and 4 months. Those who have treatments regularly may find they can go longer durations between treatments, often out to 6-12 months.

If you decide Anti-Wrinkle treatments don’t suit you, you can rest assured the treated area will gradually return to its pre-treatment appearance.

Will the treatments hurt?

Anti-Wrinkle Injections are one of the least uncomfortable medical procedures. Treatments themselves take a matter of minutes, and we practice all available injection techniques to reduce discomfort. Our clinics use ultra-thin needles to decrease any discomfort you may experience during treatments. If required, a topical anaesthetic can be used to numb the skin prior to the injection process. The numbing process takes 30 mins in total and will require you to attend your appointment 30 minutes early.

Will anyone know I've had Anti-Wrinkle Injections?

At Contour, we specialise in a natural looking result. We inject the minimum amount required to give a pleasantly aesthetic result without giving a frozen appearance. Anti-Wrinkle Injections work over 3-10 days and results and any changes will occur slowly and subtly. People may realise you look more refreshed or “less-tired” without knowing why.

How can I ensure the longest lasting result?

There are four important considerations:

  • Expertise of injector
    • Intimate knowledge of facial anatomy is essential. Expertly placed injections can ensure not one unit is wasted, and complications are kept to a minimum.
  • Dose-age requirements
    • Overdosing can cause heaviness and increased risk of complications
    • Under-dosing can cause a poor cosmetic result and short-lived results
    • Dosing depends on the strength of the muscle and should be individualised for each patient. The dose required for a 100kg man, will be very different to a 50kg female. There is no one size fits all.
  • Brand of Anti-Wrinkle
    • There are three brands in Australia approved by the TGA for Anti-Wrinkle treatments. They vary significantly in regards to cost price. Some clinics push inferior products to improve their profits. Ensure you are treated with only premium products.
  • Freshness of the product
    • Anti-Wrinkle vials contain no preservatives. Hence, once a vial is opened and reconstituted it must be used within 24 hours. The potency of the product decreases substantially after this time period. Ensure you are treated with fresh product at every visit.

When will I see results?

Depending on the product used it can take 2-5 days to see results from Anti-Wrinkle treatments. Full results are noticeable in 2 weeks.

What is the downtime of Anti-Wrinkle treatments?

This is a lunchtime no-downtime procedure. It is done in clinic taking 5 minutes. You are able to return to your daily routine immediately after treatments without anyone knowing you have had anything done.

Can you get Anti-Wrinkle treatments and fillers on the same day?

The short answer is yes. Although, there are certain areas of the face where caution needs to be exercised. Filler can cause swelling in the treated area. Swelling can increase the risk of the anti-wrinkle product travelling to an undesirable place. This can increase the risk of complications such as brow or eyelid drooping.

Provided the filler is not placed in the same area as the Anti-Wrinkle Injection, there should be no issue having them done on the same day.

There may be occasions when your injector may suggest waiting 2 weeks between anti-wrinkle and dermal filler treatments. This will be discussed with you on the day of consultation.
