During surgery, our specialist plastic surgeons will remove any glandular breast tissue causing visible gynecomastia.
How long after gynecomastia surgery can I work out?
Advice regarding post gynecomastia surgery activity is designed around reducing your risk of swelling and fluid collections post operatively.
You should avoid strenuous activity that increases blood pressure for 2 weeks post operatively. At the two week mark you can gradually increase cardio and lower body activity. From 4-6 weeks onwards you can recommence chest workouts unless told otherwise by your surgeon.
You should also listen to your body after gynecomastia surgery and not push yourself overly hard.
How long should I wear my compression vest post gynecomastia surgery?
You should keep your compression garment on for 3 days after surgery. On day 4 you may remove it to shower.
Your compression vest should then be worn as much as possible for the first 4 weeks after surgery.
This prevents excessive fluid/seroma formation in the area of glandular breast tissue removal. It also helps to encourage skin retraction and provides support to the chest post operatively.
Do I need to massage after gynecomastia surgery?
Massage can be very effective at reducing scar tissue post operatively.
What are the risks of gynecomastia surgery?
The risks of gynecomastia surgery are uncommon in the hands of our experienced specialist plastic surgeons. One of our biggest concerns post operatively is seroma formation. This is a collection of fluid that forms to occupy the space formerly taken up by breast tissue. It is for this reason we advise wearing of a compression vest at all times for 3 days post operatively, followed by wearing as much as possible for the following 4 weeks. Adherence to this aftercare instruction makes seroma formation rare.
All surgical procedures carry risks. Your specialist plastic surgeon will explain the risks as they relate to you at your consultation.
How should you sleep after gynecomastia surgery?
After gynecomastia surgery we recommend you sleep on your back on at least two pillows for at least 48 hours. Keeping elevated and not lying on your chest helps to decrease swelling and the risk of seroma formation post operatively.
You should keep your compression vest on for 3 days at all times post operatively, then wear it as often as possible for 4 weeks post op.
How long do drains stay in after gynecomastia surgery?
Not every patient needs a drain after gynecomastia surgery. If you require a drain to prevent excessive fluid collecting in most cases it will be removed within 2-3 days post operatively.
