Personalised Breast Augmentation The Incision Site

There are four placement options offered at Contour Clinics for your personalised Breast Augmentation procedure:

  • Breast Crease (Inframammary) – This is the most commonly used incision in breast augmentation surgery. This allows precise placement of the implant under direct vision, reducing the risk of complications and significantly speeding recovery time.
  •  Nipple (Periareolar) – This allows the scar to be hidden in the junction between the breast skin and areola, resulting in significantly less scarring. Due to the smaller size of the incision larger implant sizes may not be viable with this placement option.
  • Arm-Pit (Transaxillary) – This has the advantage of no visible scars on the breast or areola. The incision is hidden away high in the armpit crease.
  • Umbilical (through the belly button) – This is the least popular of our options as perfect placement of your implant is more difficult.

Our Specialist Plastic Surgeons will guide you through the pros and cons of each option and answer any question you may have until you are ready to make your decision.

Breast implants are NOT one size fits all Choosing your Implant Location

The pectoralis major muscle is a large chest muscle situated directly beneath your breast tissue. Placement of your implant relative to the pectoralis major muscle can be above, below or a combination of both.

There are three options when it comes to placement of your implant:

  • Above Muscle (Subglandular) – Placement of your implant above the muscle is usually reserved for women with thicker breast tissue, wider chest or those wanting more obvious definition.
  • Behind the muscle (Submuscular) – Placement below the pectoralis major muscle provides a more natural look and is a popular option in women with smaller breasts, smaller builds or those with less breast tissue coverage.
  • Dual Plane (Combination of above and below muscle) – This placement allows the implant to sit lower, and may be suited to those with minimal breast tissue or mild sagging of the breast. The implant is placed under the muscle at the top, with the lower part sitting above the muscle. This location is known to reduce the risk of capsular contraction.

Implant location is an important consideration in achieving your ideal breast shape. Our Specialist Plastic Surgeons will guide you through the best choice for your specific individual needs.

Texture, Type, Profile Understanding your Implant

Many different types of implants exist. Some of the variables your Plastic Surgeon will consider are:

Type

  • Silicone-gel implants – These are the most commonly used implants in Australia, being used in 98% of all breast augmentations performed in our country and 90% worldwide. They are popular due to their natural feel, aesthetically pleasing appearance and extensively researched safety profile.
  • Saline-filled implants – Previously extremely popular in the late 1990s/early 2000s, these implants were found to have a high rate of rippling, unnatural feel and prohibitively high rate of rupture, with many needing replacement prior to the 7 year mark. These are very rarely used in modern plastic surgery practice.

Profile

  • Implant profile is a combination of implant height and implant base width. The ideal profile choice for you is dependent on your baseline breast shape/size, skin, chest shape, breast tissue coverage and tightness of the overlying skin.

Texture

  1. Smooth – Whilst these implants can give a softer feel in many cases, the rate of hardening/capsular contraction and implant migration is significantly higher than other options.
  2. Polyurethane (‘Furry Brazilians’) – Unfortunately, these are no longer available due to changing in TGA rules.
  3. Textured – Textured implants have a significantly lower rate of capsular contraction and implant migration than smooth implants and have been extensively researched and approved for over 30 years.

Your Specialist Plastic Surgeon will guide you through exactly the right implant for you during your bespoke comprehensive consultation.

Choosing the perfect size and shape

There are many choices when it comes to size, shape and texture.  Let our Specialist Plastic Surgeons guide you through each of the options and design a collaborative augmentation plan specific to your individual goals.

Size: Choosing the ideal sized implant for your individual goals is one of the biggest decisions you will make when it comes to your breast augmentation procedure. Implants come in many sizes ranging from 120cc to 800cc. At Contour Clinics, your Specialist Plastic Surgeon will use 360 degree rotating 3D Vectra photographic imaging to show exactly what you can expect from different sizes of implants.

Our Surgeons also make use of bras with implants in them so that you may get a feel for how your body may look with your new breasts.

Shape: Implants come in two main shapes.

  • Round Implants (most common shape), provide a fuller upper portion (pole) of the breast.
  • Tear drop Anatomical Implants are perfect for those wanting a more natural result or those with tubular or tuberous breasts.

Assymetry: Vectra 3D imaging can identify exactly pre-existing volume differences between breasts to guide your surgeon in selecting the right size and profile of implants for each breast in the case of noticeable asymmetry.

The Contour Clinics Ultra-Short Recovery Technique

Choose the very best in Specialist Plastic Surgeons. Breast Augmentation at Contour Clinics is an experience. Take advantage of our exclusive Ultra Short Recovery Technique which includes:

  • Careful considered consultation with 3D imaging, appropriate sizing and decisions on cleavage, shape and implant type
  • Minimally invasive incision
  • Careful, expert dissection of the breast implant pocket using techniques to minimise bleeding/bruising and risk of capsular contraction
  • Intraoperative sizing to confirm ideal shape and size
  • Invisible, dissolvable stitches
  • Return to work 5-7 days depending on vocation
  • World leading scar reduction treatments with specialist lasers post procedure

Frequently Asked Questions

What implant shapes are available?

Implants come in 2 different shapes and multiple different profiles.

Shape

  1. Round – These are ideal for those patients with natural shaped breasts who are interested in symmetrically augmenting their natural breasts, especially in the upper pole.
  2. Teardrop (Anatomical) – These implants offer a gentle slope in the upper pole region. These are perfect for women wanting a more natural result, without overly projecting the upper pole of the breast. Teardrop implants are also ideal for women with a mild degree of droop, where lifting of the nipple in relation to the breast can be corrected without the need for extensive breastlift scarring.

Profile

Implant profile is a combination of implant height and implant base width. The ideal profile choice for you is dependent on your baseline breast shape/size, skin, chest shape, breast tissue coverage and tightness of the overlying skin.

At Contour, your specialist plastic surgeon will discuss profile individualised for your specific breast goals.

  2. Textured – Textured implants have a significantly lower rate of capsular contraction and implant migration than smooth implants and have been extensively researched and approved for over 30 years.

Your Specialist Plastic Surgeon will guide you through exactly the right implant for you during your bespoke comprehensive consultation.

What type of anaesthesia is used during my operation?

All Contour Clinics Breast Augmentation procedures are performed at fully accredited private hospitals with Specialist Plastic Surgeons and a team of experienced Specialist Anaesthetists.

All Breast Augmentations are performed under general anaesthetic. This is the safest way medically and aesthetically to place implants, as the muscles of the chest are completely relaxed. This allows precise placement, free of pain.

Breast surgery under ‘twilight sedation’ is uncomfortable, painful and patients are often still awake during the procedure. It is for this reason it is not offered for any Contour Clinics breast augmentations.

Will my incision be visible following my augmentation?

Our Specialist Plastic Surgeons use an Ultra-Fast recovery technique for all breast augmentations. This means less trauma to the breast tissue, resulting in less visible scarring.

Contour Clinics are the country’s leading experts in scar reduction. Starting at your complimentary review appointment, our exclusive scar reduction process starts. This includes silicone gels/strips wound massage and in time a course of laser treatments.

All breast augmentation procedures at Contour Clinics receive a free scar removal laser session complimentary to further reduce your risk of scarring.

When can I go home after my breast augmentation procedure?

Most of our patients having undergone our Ultra-Fast Recovery breast augmentation go home the day of surgery, where they have a support person at home to take care of them for the first 24hours.

You may choose to stay overnight post surgery, or go home the same day.

Upon leaving the hospital you will be provided with emergency contact information in case of any rare issues once you are at home, pain medication to ensure complete comfort and antibiotics to reduce the already rare risk of post operative infection.

When is my post operative check up appointment?

Your complimentary check up appointment will be scheduled on Day 3-4 post procedure. At this time our specialist surgical team will check your progress, review your incision sites, and start our exclusive scar reduction, massage and exercise protocol.

Can I shower after my breast augmentation procedure?

Waterproof dressings are applied at the time of surgery so you may shower immediately after surgery. Dressings are removed at your review appointment 3-4 days post procedure.

How long will bruising take to settle?

The majority of your bruising will settle in 5-6 days post procedure. Contour Clinics use a specialised LED light spectrum to reduce bruising and speed healing in your post operative period.

When will I be able to resume exercise after my breast augmentation?

The Contour Clinics Ultra-fast recovery techniques have you back to your normal routine in the shortest time possible.

Time frames to return to your normal activities include:

  • Neck exercises to start immediately
  • Activities requiring the arms to be lifted above the head should be avoided for 10 days
  • Driving can usually commence 10-14 days post procedure
  • Walking small distances in 4-7 days
  • Gym 6 weeks (upper body weights 7-8 weeks)
  • Contact sports 12 weeks

These timeframes may vary based on your progress post operatively. Your Plastic Surgeon will discuss activities that are suitable throughout your post operative course during your complimentary post operative reviews.

What can I expect during my breast augmentation recovery?

The Contour Clinics team will be with you every step of the way in your recovery process. We pride ourselves on having the best aftercare support in the Country. We have an online support team available from 7am-midnight 7 days a week, along with an expert team available via phone during business hours.

Swelling and bruising is normal post operatively. This can be asymmetrical and will resolve in 2-3 weeks. If there is significant asymmetry, or a rapid swelling develops please inform our staff immediately.

Your implants may appear to be sitting high on the chest initially. This is normal and will settle to lower more natural positions in the weeks following your surgery. Occasionally, one may settle quicker than the other leaving a mild asymmetry. This is normal and will settle with time.

Dressings are left intact until your review appointment where our surgical team will inspect to ensure you are healing as expected. At this point, the Contour Clinics scar reduction process starts with a combination of gels/strips and after a few weeks a course of laser treatments. Contour Clinics are the countries leading experts in scar reduction.

Can I still breastfeed normally after breast augmentation?

Yes. Breast augmentation does not interfere with breastfeeding. Communication between the breast tissue and the nipple is not damaged during the breast augmentation procedure. This means you can breastfeed normally.

Does breast augmentation cause a loss of sensation to the nipple?

Our Specialist Plastic Surgeons led by our Surgical Director Dr Jeremy Hunt use techniques proven over decades of experience to preserve nipple sensation. Loss of sensation is rare in the hands of an experienced Plastic Surgeon.

Does breast augmentation interfere with mammograms?

Post breast augmentation mammogram settings need to be subtly altered in order to get correct views of breast tissue. This is very common. With the correct mammogram settings, the detection of breast cancer is not decreased in the presence of a breast implant.

Do breast implants need to be changed every 10 years?

Implants do not need to be changed at the 10 year mark unless there is an issue with the implant. We recommend a clinical review with your plastic surgeon 10 years post surgery to ensure there are no complications with your implant.

Not uncommon reasons for change at the 10 year mark include:

  • Weight loss
  • Weight gain
  • Pregnancies
  • Breastfeeding

Uncommon/Rare reasons may include:

  • Capsular contraction
  • Implant migration
  • Implant

When will I see the end result of my breast augmentation procedure?

Final results are usually visible around 6-12 weeks post procedure. At this point your implants should have settled to their final position and swelling should be all but resolved.
