What is Back Liposuction

Back Liposuction is an advanced body contouring technique to remove excess fat and reshape the area of the back. The fat on the back can be divided into several important areas:

1) Infra-scapular Fat – This area is located below the shoulder blades and above the waist and is the unsightly fat that bulges just below the bra strap on women.
2) Posterior Axillary Fat – Located on the back near the armpits
3) Posterior Waist Fat – Located above the hips and often referred to as love handles
4) Lumbo-sacral Fat – Located in the midline of the lower back above the tailbone
5) Buffalo Hump – Consists of fat located on the upper back near the neck.

Removal of fat from the infra scapular region of the back can be easily removed and reshaped as the fat hers is only a single subcutaneous layer. In women when a tight bra is worn the area tends to bulge out more considerably. Fat in this area is often fibrous. Fatty tissue contains both fat cells and fibrous tissue that hold that fat cells in place. The fat in this area of the body contains a very high proportion of fibrous tissue more than other area of the body. The nature of the fat in this area can make liposuction more difficult.

However, at Contour Surgical we provide the most advanced techniques and by using smaller microcannulas in this area we can successfully treat this area with outstanding patient outcomes.

Removal of fat in the posterior axillary region of the back, the lumbo sacral region and the upper back near the neck all is easily removed by liposuction. Our focus at Contour Surgical is on patient safety and results. For this reason, we utilize the most advanced forms of tumescent liposuction to provide the best outcomes for our patients.

The Posterior Waist region contains the most significant of the fat deposits on the back region. Often when treated the hips and love handles this region is overlooked. As this area contains the larger fat deposits, we can treat it with a variety of liposuction techniques. Tumescent, Vaser, Laser and RadioFrequency Assisted are all very effective and provide outstanding outcomes for the patient. The choice of surgeon technique will be discussed with you at your consultation.

The targeted fat removal on the back region means it can be permanently reshaped and enhanced.

The Procedure

The procedure starts off with tiny incisions being made in the skin. A local tumescent anaesthetic solution is then infiltrated under the skin and into the fat layer of the treatment area. This solution contains saline, local anaesthetic and adrenaline. The adrenaline helps reduces bleeding, bruising and swelling. The tumescent solution expands the fatty layer allowing for an easy passage of the cannula. The cannula is passed through the fat layer removing fat in a repeated systematic process. First fat is removed from the deep fat tissue, then the middle layer of fat and lastly the superficial layer of fat. Suction is provided through a machine or syringe to aid in the removal of the fat.

The desired result is very reliant on the surgeon’s ability to assess the level for fat thickness and evenness. The level of aesthetic knowledge and training as well as the unique ability to contour the body and bring it into perfect alignment. At Contour Surgical we only use experienced Plastic Surgeons to do our Liposuction Procedures. All of our Plastic Surgeons have at least 10-15 years of Post-Graduate Plastic Surgery training and are fellows of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons. This provides our patients with the highest degree of comfort and the safety that they are being treated by the most qualified and experienced surgeons that the country has to offer.

If required, we use dissolvable sutures to close liposuction entry sites. These stitches are buried under the skin, allowing for perfect skin edge opposition, leading to a lower risk of scarring then visible external stitches. In some cases, your Plastic Surgeon will opt to leave your liposuction entry sites open for drainage of the anaesthetic solution.

A special compression garment is worn immediately after the procedure. This is put on immediately post procedure, before you awake from general anaesthetic. The compression garment is recommended for between 4 and 6 weeks depending on the and helps reduce swelling, bruising, and importantly help the skin retract after the removal of the fat.

post surgery Your Back Liposuction Recovery

Your procedure will be performed in an accredited private hospital operating theatre. You will return home on the same day of the procedure.
After surgery has finished and your compression garment placed you will be seen by one of our nurses and they will make sure you are awake and comfortable. The compression garment will help minimise swelling, bruising, and bleeding as well as improving post-operative comfort. It is important to remember the garment is vital for the healing process and outcome of the procedure. The garment should be worn continually for the first two weeks and only be removed for showering. During weeks three and four, the garment only needs to be worn during the day. It is important that you lay the garment smoothly on the body, especially the stomach area. Creasing of the garment will create a collection of fluid around the crease, which can be difficult and time consuming to resolve.

The recovery process generally has some mild bruising and discomfort. We will help the recovery process with facilitation of lymphatic massage referrals if required. You may return to work as earlier as three days post-surgery if you wish.

Patients are encouraged to walk and move around as often as possible post-surgery. This will assist in eliminating the stiffness experienced after your procedure as well as preventing deep vein thrombosis of the lower limbs. You will most likely notice that fluid will leak from the incision sites. The fluid will be clear or slightly red in colour. This is the tumescent solution and is no cause for alarm. The leaking usually lasts for about 48 hours, a couple of days longer when the procedure involves the arms or stomach. These areas can leak for up to five days. Postoperative leaking from the surgical sites is completely normal and should be expected.

Swelling and bruising start on the second day. Most of this swelling and bruising will go away inside two weeks. Patients will see most of their results in six weeks and will continue to see results for up to six months.

You will need to attend a post-surgery follow up several days after your procedure and then again at three months post procedure. Lymphatic massages post-surgery may aid recovery and reduce swelling. We recommend two massages twice per week for the first two weeks and can facilitate massages on request.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the procedure take to complete?

Back Liposuction Procedures take around one hour to three hours to complete depending on the amount of fat to be removed and the number of areas involved.

Will I feel any pain during my back liposuction procedure?

No. You will be under general anaesthetic and will not feel any pain during the procedure.

Are the results from back liposuction permanent?

Once you reach your late teenage years your body has the total amount of fat cells it will ever have. These fat cells can then only ever expand or shrink in size.

Liposuction permanently removes fat cells in the treatment area. This means you can no longer store fat to the same degree in the treated area. However, this does not mean you can’t gain weight in other areas. In order to maintain your results, it is recommended to follow a healthy diet and exercise plan.

Will I have scarring?

Liposuction involves making incisions in the skin, which means small marks that fade overtime will be left post procedure. However significant scarring is rare. The incisions made for the procedure are always small and in discreet locations.

At Contour Surgical we offer best in class laser treatments to reduce any scarring after the procedure. We provide a complimentary scar removal treatment for all our liposuction patients. We find that with a combination of expert placement of liposuction entry sites, skilful management of the sites post-operatively and complimentary skin resurfacing laser most scarring is removed or fades to become hardly noticeable.

When do I see my results?

You will notice an improvement immediately after your arm liposuction procedure. However, over the next 48 hours you will have swelling and it will take up to 4-6 weeks for the swelling to subside and the skin to tighten and retract. From 6 weeks onwards you can expect your results to gradually improve with full results being seen at around 3-6 months post-surgery.

Should I have Back Liposuction before or after weight loss?

Achieving a healthy and sustainable weight is the best option prior to having any liposuction procedure. If you are significantly overweight, we recommend you lose weight fist before undergoing the procedure. For those who are having trouble losing large amounts weight loss surgery will be the best option.

What are the Risks & Complications of Back Liposuction?

All surgical procedures carry risk. It is for this reason that you should carefully consider who performs your liposuction procedure. Liposuction when done correctly by an experienced surgeon is a safe and effective procedure that can produce outstanding and life changing results.

Complications of liposuction include, but are not limited to:

– Discomfort post procedure
– Bruising
– Haematoma (a collection of blood under the skin)
– Infection uncommon due to a sterile field being maintained during the procedure and antibiotics given after the procedure
– Persistent Swelling
– A Seroma or Fluid accumulation under the skin
– Deep Vein Thrombosis (this is a complication from any surgery where movement post-surgery is reduced. It is extremely rare)
– Skin Irregularities. This occurs from poor liposuction technique by either over or under liposuctioning or by liposuctioning at the wrong skin depth.
– Missed Areas – Occurs when the area surrounding a large area is missed
– Skin Laxity – If a surgeon over liposuctions a particular the skin in this area may not be able to retract enough. If the skin is extremely loose to start with the risk of this increases.

When choosing liposuction, it is always recommended to choose a skilled experienced Plastic Surgeon.

Can I exercise after Back Liposuction?

A common question from patients is “When can I resume exercise post back liposuction”?
We recommend walking and moving around 48 hours after your surgery. Light cardio and exercise can be resumed after 5 days, and then more intense workouts can resume after two weeks. Full training is not recommended until 4 weeks after your liposuction procedure

Can I drink alcohol after liposuction?

We recommend not drinking alcohol post-surgery for safety reasons because of its interaction with pain medications and antibiotics. It is recommended to avoid drinking for at least 5 days after surgery to prevent any chance of excessive bruising or bleeding.
