The Blog Can Dermal Filler Migrate?

Dermal fillers are used to fill in lines and wrinkles or add volume to areas like your lips or cheeks. If you’re thinking about getting dermal fillers, you’re probably thought about some of the things that could go wrong with them. You’re likely thinking about the possibility of migration. The answer to the question of whether dermal fillers can migrate is yes, but there’s actually no need to worry, because the solution is simple and there are many steps you can take to lower the risk.

Preventing migration

Migration of dermal fillers isn’t very common, but it does happen, particularly when performed by inexperienced hands. However, there are ways to prevent it from occurring. Here’s a comprehensive list:

  • Choose a reputable, experienced and fully qualified practitioner to perform your filler. Check their credentials and read reviews from previous customers. If it’s too cheap or the clinic looks unprofessional (or it isn’t a clinic at all), then go to someone else. The person making an injection into your body needs to be someone you can trust.
  • Ask what product your practitioner is going to use. If you do this, you can easily research whether the product is high quality, TGA approved and appropriate for the area you’re getting treated.
  • Tell your practitioner if you already have filler in that area. This is crucial for them to take into account so that you don’t end up with too much filler.
  • Follow the aftercare instructions to a tee. No matter how good your practitioner is, you can undo all their hard work by disregarding their instructions and not taking care of your filler.

Identifying Migration

If you follow all the steps on that list, the risk of your filler migrating becomes very small. Still, it sometimes does happen simply because of unique differences in anatomy and physiology between people. If you suspect that your filler has migrated, there are some things to look out for that can help you determine if your suspicions are correct. If you have lip filler, migration is likely to result in something that looks like a shelf above your lip. It can also manifest in unevenness in the lips or lumps around or underneath your lips. In the undereye area, migration can be identified by lumps and ridges. In all areas of your face, you will be able to tell that your filler has migrated if there are lumps or unevenness or the appearance of your face has suddenly changed.

Treating Migration

The good news is that migration is highly treatable and easy to get rid of. Even if you do absolutely nothing, the problem will eventually sort itself out. Fillers are temporary and are dissolved by our bodies over time, even when they have migrated. A quicker solution is to get the filler dissolved using Hyalase. This is something that your practitioner can easily inject into the affected area, and it breaks up the bonds that hold the filler together. You can have a ‘baby-dose’ of Hyalase to treat the issue at hand without reversing all of your filler.

So, What’s The Risk?

Migration isn’t common with dermal fillers, and it becomes even more unlikely if you take all the appropriate precautions and go to a reputable practitioner who knows what they’re doing. In the unlikely event that your filler does migrate, then it’s a temporary problem with an easy solution. The possibility of migration shouldn’t stop you from feeling confident and happy in your skin.
